'Tonight it is the concert. Two Prodigies of Nature are coming to play in my lady's ball-room. As soon as the concert begins I understand why the whole world comes to stare and listen.' Scipio is eleven years old and a lady's page. He plays the harpsichord, speaks French and German, and sings in Italian. But what was appealing and remarkable in a small child is no longer so in a 'hobbledehoy'. And after he meets the two child prodigies, Wolfi and Nannerl, at a concert, Scipio's fate will change forever.

A weave of mostly joys, some sorrows, and a sprinkling of earthy humour during a muddled childhood. I was orphaned in 1935 at the age of two, and my maternal grandmother became my legal guardian. The main thrust of my childhood memories focuses on home and school life, as well as childhood activities and travel in Englands North East, particularly in County Durham. Of course, the major conflict of World War II was a prevalent factor that affected everyone. Being six when the war started and twelve at the end, observations and experiences of that period are no doubt of interest to a wide readership. Generally, in the telling of my personal recollections, I have also relayed information regarding the working-class fabric prevalent during the thirties and forties. Another facet of the story concerns my attempts to cope with and solve personal problems and inadequacies. Consequently, there is, at times, a reflective, searching tone to the narrative. The final chapter describes the preparation for immigration to Canada and the trip by plane and train to Vancouver, British Columbia. Everyones story is unique, but I believe I have managed to portray a wide-enough spectrum to interest all age groups.

Rafe Bate’s latest novel is an enticing blend of romance, mystery and sailing, set in the Caribbean and loosely based on Rafe’s own adventures Set mostly against a background of three magnificent and innovative trading schooners, this interwoven tale of romance and adventure is concerned with an attempt to reform and implement justice. It brings together a cast of diverse characters who become united in this endeavour, creating a formidable team. Their efforts, aided by mysterious mental forces, ensure that with the re-appearance of The Settler, there is growing apprehension amongst those who evade or subvert justice. Within this exciting yarn, the book poses possibilities in regard to our origins. The authenticity of the storms and sailing adventures most certainly come from the direct experience of the author who built his own aluminium schooner and sailed widely. Author Rafe Bates has lived an extraordinary life during which he has gained wide personal experience in many spheres. His writing draws on these experiences and therefore carries a powerful authenticity which he recounts in an easy narrative style without mincing words or opinions. This new novel follows the hard-hitting The Settler and Lest I Forget his factual and outspoken controversial memoirs. He now lives in the Azores in mid-Atlantic Ocean.

Dancing In The Rain written by Maggie Silk and has been published by Troubador Publishing Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-15 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

When Maggie Silk was ten years old, she knew exactly what she wanted to do with her life: to become a teacher, to travel, to marry a man in uniform and to have four children. She achieved all this and much more besides... as we see in her memoir, Dancing in the Rain. Born in 1938 in Cleethorpes, North Lincolnshire, Maggie was the third of four children. But who would have believed that the four-year-old girl with a mucky dress, found wandering alone and taken home by an American serviceman who knew her mother, would, four decades later, receive a standing ovation from the Rotary Club in Stanford Springs, Connecticut? Or that the same girl who’d balanced eight pints of beer in a fish basket on the handlebars of her bike would one day take tea and scones with a bishop and an ambassador at the British embassy in Tokyo? Or that the barefoot child who ran ponies for sixpences on the sands every summer would be at the opera in Berlin when President Kennedy was assassinated? Maggie worked on three continents and, over the years, has lived in twenty different homes. She is not, as she herself observes, “an average stay at home housewife” – even with four children! Set in Berlin, Singapore, America, Latvia and Switzerland, her true story gives an affectionate and funny account of the mishaps, faux pas and adventures of a schoolteacher. Featuring every decade from the 1940s to the present day, Dancing in the Rain will appeal to those looking for a nostalgic, yet often amusing and thought-provoking reflection on years gone by. The book has been compiled from Maggie’s diaries and correspondence throughout the years and inspired by a creative writing class, where the idea was nurtured from a seed into a colourful, fascinating memoir.
