Excerpt from Chinese Scenes and People: With Notices of Christian Missions and Missionary Life in a Series of Letters From Various Parts of China The letters that are here presented to the public were written from China, during a residence of two years there. It need hardly be said, that the Authoress had not the remotest idea of their being published. It was not till after her early death that her father collected and transcribed those letters which appear in this volume. He submitted them to the consideration of some friends wholly unconnected with the family, who were pleased to speak highly of their merits, and recommended their publication. Excerpt from Robert Morrison: The Pioneer of Chinese Missions China is the home of a very ancient and advanced civilisation. Its inhabitants were clothed in their silken and linen fabrics when our forefathers were simply staining their skins with woad. They had their great cities when the tribes of Britain rambled in primeval forests. They manu factured paper nine hundred years before Europe had dis covered the useful art. They invented printing at least five hundred years before the Dutchman took the impres sion of the letters he had carved upon the tree. They had used the mariner's compass for five centuries before Marco Polo brought it into Europe. They had an extensive manufacture of pottery and porcelain ages before the ele gant forms of Grecian or Etruscan pottery were moulded. They were acquainted with abstruse philosophies and curious sciences before the Republic of Rome had arisen. From hoar antiquity popular education had existed in the land, and by a system of competitive examinations every office of the State has been thrown open even to the poorest. Thus China, as a great and civilised nation, comes down the stream of time side by side with the ancient empires of Egypt, Assyria, and India. These passed away, and there succeeded the splendid empires of Greece and Rome, and these again have been followed by the young, fresh nations of Europe and America. But China has not passed away as its early contemporaries did, but is to - day as populous, as strong, and as promising in regard to the future as it has ever been. A Mission In China Classic Reprint written by W. E. Soothill and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-03 with Religion categories.

Excerpt from A Mission in China This book is written chiefly for those who, through many years, have loyally lent their support to the work recorded in the following pages, and whose right it is to know more fully that their faith has been met with faithfulness. It was commenced eighteen months ago in response to repeated requests, and with numerous and prolonged periods of interruption, its compilation has occupied the spare moments of that length of time. Herein are recounted some of the experiences met with, and methods followed during nearly a quarter of a century's work amongst the Chinese, a work that has been rewarded by nearly ten thousand conversions, and an increasing confidence in the universal advent of the Kingdom of God. Its principal object is to depict our own Mission, as typical of many others. In addition five chapters will be found at the end, giving in brief an account of the Chinese religions, religions 36 involved and mutually intermingled that close investigation and considerable reading have been necessary to anything like a clear and succinct delineation. The whole closes with a short history of Christianity in China. It is the misfortune of a book of this character that great demands are made on the first personal pronoun. If the reader finds that letter too oft repeated, his sympathy is craved in consideration of the number of times it has been suppressed.
