The articles in this collection demonstrate that a change is taking place in New Testament studies. Throughout the twentieth century, New Testament scholarship primarily worked under the assumption that only two languages, Aramaic and Greek, were in common use in the land of Israel in the first century. The current contributors investigate various areas where increasing linguistic data and changing perspectives have moved Hebrew out of a restricted, marginal status within first-century language use and the impact on New Testament studies. Five articles relate to the general sociolinguistic situation in the land of Israel during the first century, while three articles present literary studies that interact with the language background. The final three contributions demonstrate the impact this new understanding has on the reading of Gospel texts.

This book is a groundbreaking, paradigm-shifting look at the “languages/tongues” problem (γλῶσσαι/glṓssai) of the first-century AD Corinthian church. It adduces that in a multilingual setting, new converts were expressing themselves in their native dialect without translation, where Koine Greek was not yet overriding all regional dialects. This cuts against the idea that tongues were supernatural earthly languages, an idea not found before AD 160. Vellacott also argues against the view that “tongues” were heavenly languages, as claimed by Pentecostals/Charismatics. This, he says, is a novel trend started about 145 years ago by German, higher-critical scholars and seized upon after the 1906–15 Los Angeles Azusa Street Revival’s supposed supernatural earthly languages proved to be a mirage, whereupon a redefinition to “heavenly/angelic, non-earthly languages” occurred. This book soundly establishes the credibility of an ancient third view regarding “tongues”—that they were non-supernatural, learned, earthly languages. The author endeavors to demonstrate that this is the earliest known Christian interpretation of New Testament tongues/languages.

Goy: Israel's Others and the Birth of the Gentile traces the development of the term and category of the goy from the Bible to rabbinic literature. Adi Ophir and Ishay Rosen-Zvi show that the category of the goy was born much later than scholars assume; in fact not before the first century CE. They explain that the abstract concept of the gentile first appeared in Paul's Letters. However, it was only in rabbinic literature that this category became the center of a stable and long standing structure that involved God, the Halakha, history, and salvation. The authors narrate this development through chronological analyses of the various biblical and post biblical texts (including the Dead Sea scrolls, the New Testament and early patristics, the Mishnah, and rabbinic Midrash) and synchronic analyses of several discursive structures. Looking at some of the goy's instantiations in contemporary Jewish culture in Israel and the United States, the study concludes with an examination of the extraordinary resilience of the Jew/goy division and asks how would Judaism look like without the gentile as its binary contrast.

The Gospel of Luke has long been known for its variation between good, educated Greek and Semitic influences. In the last century, five theories have attempted to explain the Semitic influence: Semitic sources; imitation of the Greek Bible; the Greek of the ancient synagogue; literary code-switching between standard Greek and semitized Greek; and the social background of bilingualism. Albert Hogeterp and Adelbert Denaux revisit Luke's Greek and evaluate which alleged Semitisms of vocabulary and syntax are tenable in light of comparative investigation across corpora of Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic, literary as well as documentary, texts. They contend that Semitisms in Luke's Greek are only fully understood in light of a complementarity of linguistic backgrounds, and evaluate them in diachronic respect of Synoptic comparison and in synchronic respect of their place in Luke's narrative style and communicative strategy.
