Whether all human languages are fundamentally the same or different has been a subject of debate for ages. This problem has deep philosophical implications: If languages are all the same, it implies a fundamental commonality-and thus the mutual intelligibility-of human thought. We are now on the verge of answering this question. Using a twenty-year-old theory proposed by the world's greatest living linguist, Noam Chomsky, researchers have found that the similarities among languages are more profound than the differences. Languages whose grammars seem completely incompatible may in fact be structurally almost identical, except for a difference in one simple rule. The discovery of these rules and how they may vary promises to yield a linguistic equivalent of the Periodic Table of the Elements: a single framework by which we can understand the fundamental structure of all human language. This is a landmark breakthrough, both within linguistics, which will thereby become a full-fledged science for the first time, and in our understanding of the human mind.

Shearin argues that ancient Epicurean writing on language offers a theory of performative language. Such a theory describes how languages acts, providing psychic therapy or creating new verbal meanings, rather than passively describing the nature of the universe. This observation allows us new insight into how Lucretius, our primary surviving Epicurean author, uses language in his great poem, 'De rerum natura' ('On the Nature of Things').

While scholarship on Lucretius has looked to connect De rerum natura to its larger cultural and historical context, it has never turned to speech act theory in this quest. This omission is striking at least in so far as speech act theory was developed precisely as a way of locating language (including texts) within a theory of action. At its root speech act theory is about how language is part of history and acts within it, and it thus holds promise for addressing this long-standing scholarly concern. Further, as this book asserts, speech act theory is not some modern development that one may apply to De rerum natura but rather a theory native, at least in some respects, to Epicurus' school. The argument contends that a central problem in Epicurean semantics may be resolved if we allow that Epicurus (or his school) developed an understanding of performative language. It reads the fragmentary remains of Epicurus' writing on language against central texts of speech act theory such as J. L. Austin's How to Do Things with Words and Émile Benveniste's definition of the performative as a form of speaking in which the act of speech creates its own referent. The book moves on to consider the larger place of performativity within De rerum natura, and the poem's insight on the acts of promising and naming. Bridging critical theory and ancient philosophy, The Language of Atoms will engage scholars in a host of humanities disciplines, including Classics, Philosophy, and Comparative Literature.

When I meet a difficult problem, I begin to go around it, approaching it again and again from different directions. If I persistently continue these approaches, it can happen that no problem remains. (RolfNevanlinna, in a private discussion.) In 1976, after a mainly administrative period of some 15 years, I spent a couple of months at CERN, working in the Pauli Collection. When I found the Pauli-Fierz correspondence, I had the intuitive feeling that there was the key: that "it was an objective description, and that it was the only possible objective description" for the mysteries of quantum mechanics. Here I have cited Bohr in his 'last interview' (see Chap. 7), which I became acquainted with only later, but I was immediately convinced that Pauli's view was more profound than anything else I had read about in quantum mechanics. However, nowadays the investigation of the foundations of quantum theory is dominated by 'realism', which means that the influence of the psyche on our conception of reality is ignored. This book is an attempt to show that this is not possible in quantum mechanics.

The aim of this volume is twofold. First, it is an attempt to simplify and clarify the relativistic theory of the hydrogen-like atoms. For this purpose we have used the mathematical formalism, introduced in the Dirac theory of the electron by David Hestenes, based on the use of the real Cli?ord algebra Cl(M) associated with the Minkwoski space–time M, that is, the euclidean 4 R space of signature (1,3). This algebra may be considered as the extension to this space of the theory of the Hamilton quaternions (which occupies an importantplaceintheresolutionoftheDiracequationforthecentralpotential problem). The clarity comes from the real form given by D. Hestenes to the electron wavefunctionthatreplaces, inastrictequivalence, theDiracspinor.Thisform is directly inscribed in the frame of the geometry of the Minkwoski space in which the experiments are necessarily placed. The simplicity derives from the uni?cation of the language used to describe the mathematical objects of the theory and the data of the experiments. The mathematics concerning the de?nition and the use of the algebra Cl(M) are not very complicated. Anyone who knows what a vector space is will be able to understand the geometrical implications of this algebra. The lecture will be perhaps more di?cult for the readers already acquainted with the complex formalism of the matrices and spinors, to the extent that the new language will appear di?erent from the one that they have used. But the correspondence between the two formalisms is ensured in the text at each stage of the theory.
