"Unlike formal writing, informal writing is much closer to spoken language, so studying letters from the past provides us with clues to the development of nonstandard varieties of English. Led by a team of experts, this book draws on a range of informal letter corpora and outlines the historical sociolinguistic value of letter analysis, both in theory and practice. By looking at specific aspects of the language used by writers, this book aims to discover how they positioned themselves in society and how they attempted, consciously or unconsciously, to construct social identities. This study challenges the assumption that there is only one 'legitimate' and homogenous form of English or of any other language. It questions 'standard' language ideologies and highlights the importance of non-standard vernacular forms. A valuable addition to the field, this book will be welcomed by sociolinguists, historical linguists and social historians"--

The English language is a fascinating subject and thanks to circumstances in history has possibly travelled the globe more than any other. The very basis of the written language is in the letters used to form words, and this book examines every aspect of the alphabet available for writing English, from the formation of letters to their use in words. Each and every letter of the alphabet used to write down the English language has a story to tell. Often we accept them without a second thought and even believe there are only twenty-six of them, whereas if we look more closely there are at least fifty-two as each of the capital letters has a lower case form. Sometimes they are just smaller versions of the larger, such as C and c, or X and x, but the majority of letters have a different form entirely like A and a, or D and d. They also have more than one sound associated with them, many have three, and the mighty letter R involves itself with around seventeen different sounds. No wonder the language takes some mastering! The Book of Letters looks at global English, which the Oxford Online Dictionary refers to as 'British and World English', and examines each letter in minute detail starting with the shape, to the inferred sounds. Fact-finders, teachers and students should all improve their knowledge from this detailed work.

The contributions in this book discuss letter-writing from 1400 to 1800, and the material studied ranges from the late medieval Paston Letters and the correspondence between Sweden and the German Hanse to Early Modern English family letters and correspondence in natural history between England and North America in the eighteenth century. By bringing a set of corpus linguistic, discourse analytic, pragmatic and sociolinguistic approaches to bear on historical letter-writing activity, the articles both extend and complement the traditional letter-writing research in the history of European languages, which approaches the topic from a largely rhetorical perspective. The articles in this book were first published as a Special Issue of the Journal of Historical Pragmatics 5:2 (2004), share a contextualised view of letters: whether approached from the perspective of language contact, social and discursive practices, intertextuality, audience design or linguistic politeness, letters are analysed as part of their specific familial, business or scientific network. Writing letters thus emerges as highly context-sensitive social interaction.
