Excerpt from The Language of Richard Wagner's Ring Des Nibelungen Several years before his demise came the noted reform by Gluck. There is no evidence that Gluck wrote a single German Opera, but this was chiefly the fault of existing conditions. What could a man of his stamp do with such libretti as those that have just been referred to? He held the stringent views upon the relation of text and music which the Florentine Camar ata had promulgated before him, hence it was natural that he should look about for the very best texts. Of these he found none worthy of consideration at the beginning of his career, and in later life, in a foreign country and engaged with foreign pro ductions, he felt the impossibility of writing a German opera. Though be seriously thought of putting Klopstock's Hermans schlacht to music, he was never fortunate enough to have a close acquaintance with the great literary men Of his time and country, though these were in sympathy with his reform. Wie land1 writes: At last we have lived to see the time when the mighty genius of Gluck has undertaken the great task of musical reform. The success of his 'orpheus' would justify the greatest hopes were there no insurmountable difficulties to defeat his best intentions even in those European cities where the fine arts own the foremost temples. It is a great and courageous undertaking to elevate these arts to their original dignity and honor, which the rabble is wont to look upon as a means for sensuality, and to establish nature upon that throne which for so long a time has been usurped by the capricious power of custom, luxury and wanton sensuality. Today, more than a century after its first performance, Richard Wagner's The Ring of Nibelung endures as one of the most significant artistic creations in the history of opera. This monumental work not only altered previously accepted concepts of music and drama but also inspired creative and intellectual efforts far beyond the field of opera. Previous studies of the Ring have appealed only to those already acquainted in some way with the Wagnerian art. For the uninitiated, Wagner and his landmark creation have seemed forbidding, and those eager to learn about the masterpiece have faced a vast and frequently esoteric body of commentary. Professor Cord addresses the interests of the non-specialist by taking the reader first into Wagner's unique intent, and then through the complete history of the Ring. Cord, who has attended forty performances of the Ring, considers the conception of the poem, its development into a music-drama exemplifying Wagnerian thought, its introduction to the world, and the reactions and interpretation it elicits.

This book argues that Wagner saw the music drama as an instrument by which to develop the social and political ideas of his day, and it focuses on how he attempted in the Ring to create an allegory that would explore a new, modern concept of the self and history.

"Andrew Porter's utterly natural, often poetic, faithfully rendered English text should be a revelation...The immediacy of instant comprehension gives the entire drama an added dimension."-The New York Times Richard Wagner's vast Der Ring des Nibelungen cycle comprises four full-length operas (Das Rheingold, Die Walkure, Siegfried and Gotterdammerung) and is arguably the most extraordinary achievement in the history of opera. His own libretto to the operas, translated by Andrew Porter, is an intricate system of metric patterns, imaginative metaphors and alliteration, combining to produce the music in text. The Ring of the Niblung by Richard Wagner and illustrated by Arthur Rackham. Translation by Margaret Armour. Some critics mention that The Lord of the Rings was directly and heavily derived from Richard Wagner's opera cycle, Der Ring des Nibelungen. This edition includes:- The Rhinegold- The Valkyrie- Siegfried- Twilight of the GodsDer Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung), WWV 86, is a cycle of four German-language epic music dramas composed by Richard Wagner. The works are based loosely on characters from the Norse sagas and the Nibelungenlied. The cycle is a work of extraordinary scale. Perhaps the most outstanding facet of the monumental work is its sheer length: a full performance of the cycle takes place over four nights at the opera, with a total playing time of about 15 hours, depending on the conductor's pacing. The first and shortest work, Das Rheingold, typically lasts two and a half hours, while the final and longest, Gtterdmmerung, takes up to five hours, excluding intervals. The cycle is modelled after ancient Greek dramas that were presented as three tragedies and one satyr play. The Ring proper begins with Die Walkre and ends with Gtterdmmerung, with Rheingold as a prelude. Wagner called Das Rheingold a Vorabend or "Preliminary Evening", and Die Walkre, Siegfried and Gtterdmmerung were subtitled First Day, Second Day and Third Day, respectively, of the trilogy proper. The plot revolves around a magic ring that grants the power to rule the world, forged by the Nibelung dwarf Alberich from gold he stole from the Rhine maidens in the river Rhine. The Ring itself as described by Wagner is a Rune-magic taufr ("tine", or "talisman") intended to rule the feminine multiplicative power by a fearful magical act termed as 'denial of love' ("Liebesverzicht"), which is probably an allusion to ritual circumcision.

Wagner S Ring In 1848 written by Richard Wagner and has been published by Camden House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Music categories.

In 1848 Richard Wagner began what would become the largest stage work of his career, the Ring of the Nibelung. In preparation for the task he composed an overview of the Nibelung myth designed to lead to a drama; he then composed the verse "libretto" Siegfried's Death. Although he abandoned the idea of a single opera on Siegfried in favor of the huge project that developed out of it in the succeeding years -- the Ring cycle -- he did consider the two early documents important enough to include them in his collected works. The present volume seeks to inform the English-speaking reader in three ways: by providing modern, reliable translations of the two Wagner texts, which are otherwise not available (the German original is provided on facing pages); by furnishing an overview of German scholarship available to Wagner and others working on the Nibelung legend in the first half of the nineteenth century; and by making available a bibliography of further reading. The volume will be useful to students of musicology, to students and historians of myth and legend, and to all Wagnerians interested in the genesis of the Ring cycle. Accessible to the general reader, it maintains scholarly rigor and provides information about materials not available in English. Edward R. Haymes is Professor in the Department of Modern Languages at Cleveland State University.
