André Breton (1896-1966) was the founder and major theorist of the surrealist movement, one of the most vital currents of modern poetry and revolutionary thought. This compilation of Breton's writings gives a compact survey of his views and the perspectives of international surrealism as they have developed through more than half a century, and as they serve to guide the groups and individuals who, in dozens of centuries, have taken up the surrealist cause. About half of the selections are published here in English for the first time; others are reprinted from scarce, out-of-print periodicals. The editor, Franklin Rosemont, met Breton in 1966, and later that year organised the first indigenous US surrealist group. He is the author of two books of poems and the Manifesto on the Position & Direction of the Surrealist Movement in the United States (1970). He played a major role in organising the 1976 World Surrealist Exhibition in Chicago, by far the largest exhibition ever prepared by the surrealists. He lives in Chicago where he edits Arsenal/Surrealist Subversion, English-language journal of the international surrealist movement.

This very continuity means that it is difficult to place them at one remove from us in 'history'." (HOPKINS 2004: Introduction) Defining Surrealism has become, as HOPKINS's statement illustrates, a very challenging task due to its wide prevalence in contemporary speech and language, which makes it difficult to isolate Surrealism historically and to distinguish between its intended meanings within certain historical epochs. As the following section will outline, Surrealism has been continuously influenced and shaped from generation to generation and has therefore been marked by different characteristics throughout history. The long historical chronology (cf. ASPLEY 2010: XV) of the surreal has indeed caused a lot of confusion with regard to the usage of the term, which should always be contextualized within the respective examined epoch in order to "grasp" its intended "spirit." This research paper aims at examining and defining the early twentieth century Surrealist Movement more closely, which has been described in the Manifeste du surrealisme in 1924 by ANDRE BRETON, who seems to be widely acknowledged as the father of Surrealism. After a brief theoretical section outlining a short historical chronology of Surrealism and commenting on BRETON's influence on the Surrealist Movement in 20th Century France, chapter 3 will present an analysis of Nadja (1928), one of BRETON's most important surrealist novels forming the "climax of the literary movement of Surrealism in France" (REENTS 2009: 31). Works of art such as paintings with words on them or poems shaped as images communicate to the viewer by means of more than one medium. Here is presented a particular group of hybrid art works from the early twentieth century, to discover in what way words and images can function together to create meaning. The four central artists considered in this study investigate word/image forms in their work. F.T. Marinetti invented parole in libertà, among other ideas, to free language from syntactic connections. Umberto Boccioni experimented with newspaper clippings on the canvas from 1912-1915, and these collages constitute an important exploration into word/image forms. André Breton's collection of poems Clair de terre (1923) contains several typographical variations for iconographic effect. René Magritte explored the relationship between words and images, juxtaposing signifiers to contradictory signifieds on the canvas. A final chapter introduces media other than poetry and painting on which words and images appear. Posters, the theater, and the relatively new medium of cinema foreground words and images constantly. This volume will be of interest to scholars of twentieth-century French or Italian literature or painting, and to scholars of word and image studies.
