A guide to physical and psychic joy. The Language of the Body is the psychological masterpiece that showed how and why conventional analysis was failing. And itʼs the spark that ignited the movement toward body language as the key - and cure - for many psychological problems. Millions of Americans have become victims of their tension-producing environment. They have lost sensibility and sensuality in the struggle for survival. They have betrayed their bodies - and their bodies are betraying them. Dr. Alexander Lowen brilliantly demonstrates how body is the mirror of character and can act as the clue to emotional disorders. A pioneer in the dramatically successful field of bioenergetic analysis, Dr. Lowen explains this method of therapy and documents his work with detailed case histories as well as psychological and physical descriptions of a host of character types: oral, masochistic, hysterical, Phallic-narcissistic, passive-feminine, schizophrenic and schizoid. What emerges is the clear and astonishing relationship of personality functioning to patterns of bodily movement and muscular tension, and a classic portrait of the disturbed individual in his many physical guises. The Language of the Body is an eloquent contribution to the understanding and treatment of human emotional disturbance.

What is the role of meaning in linguistic theory? Generative linguists have severely limited the influence of meaning, claiming that language is not affected by other cognitive processes and that semantics does not influence linguistic form. Conversely, cognitivist and functionalist linguists believe that meaning pervades and motivates all levels of linguistic structure. This dispute can be resolved conclusively by evidence from signed languages. Signed languages are full of iconic linguistic items: words, inflections, and even syntactic constructions with structural similarities between their physical form and their referents' form. Iconic items can have concrete meanings and also abstract meanings through conceptual metaphors. Language from the Body rebuts the generativist linguistic theories which separate form and meaning and asserts that iconicity can only be described in a cognitivist framework where meaning can influence form.

Rethinking Body Language written by Geoffrey Beattie and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-03 with Psychology categories.

Challenging all of our old assumptions about the subject, Rethinking Body Language builds on the most recent cutting-edge research to offer a new theoretical perspective on this subject that will transform the way we look at other people. In contrast to the traditional view that body language is primarily concerned with the expression of emotions and the negotiation of social relationships, author Geoff Beattie argues instead that gestures reflect aspects of our thinking but in a different way to verbal language. Critically, the spontaneous hand movements that people make when they talk often communicate a good deal more than they intend. This ground-breaking book takes body language analysis to a whole new level. Engagingly written by one of the leading experts in the field, it shows how we can detect deception in gesture–speech mismatches and how these unconscious movements can give us real insight into people's underlying implicit attitudes.

The Body in Language: Comparative studies of Linguistic Embodiment provides new insights into the theory of linguistic embodiment in its universal and cultural aspects. The contributions of the volume offer theoretical reflections on grammaticalization, lexical semantics, philosophy, multimodal communication and - by discussing metaphorization and metonymy in figurative language - on cognitive linguistics in general. Case studies contribute first-hand data on embodiment from more than 15 languages and present findings on the body in language in diverse cultures from various continents. Embodiment fundamentally underlies human conceptualization and the present discussions reveal a wide range of target domains in conceptual transfers with the body as the source domain.
