Homage to Catalonia is George Orwell's personal account of his experiences and observations fighting for the POUM militia of the Republican army during the Spanish Civil War. The war was one of the defining events of his political outlook and a significant part of what led him to write in 1946, "Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for Democratic Socialism, as I understand it." The first edition was published in the United Kingdom in 1938. The book was not published in the United States until February 1952, when it appeared with an influential preface by Lionel Trilling. The only translation published in Orwell's lifetime was into Italian, in December 1948. A French translation by Yvonne Davet-with whom Orwell corresponded, commenting on her translation and providing explanatory notes-in 1938-39, was not published until five years after Orwell's death. Book Summary: Orwell served as a private, a corporal (cabo) and-when the informal command structure of the militia gave way to a conventional hierarchy in May 1937-as a lieutenant, on a provisional basis, in Catalonia and Aragon from December 1936 until June 1937. In June 1937, the leftist political party with whose militia he served (the POUM, the Workers' Party of Marxist Unification, an anti-Stalinist communist party) was declared an illegal organisation, and Orwell was consequently forced to flee. Having arrived in Barcelona on 26 December 1936, Orwell told John McNair, the Independent Labour Party's (ILP) representative there, that he had "come to Spain to join the militia to fight against Fascism." He also told McNair that "he would like to write about the situation and endeavour to stir working class opinion in Britain and France." McNair took him to the POUM barracks, where Orwell immediately enlisted. "Orwell did not know that two months before he arrived in Spain, the [Soviet law enforcement agency] NKVD's resident in Spain, Aleksandr Orlov, had assured NKVD Headquarters, 'the Trotskyist organisation POUM can easily be liquidated'-by those, the Communists, whom Orwell took to be allies in the fight against Franco."

"Helen Graham highlights the domestic and international context of the Spanish Civil War, and reveals its origins in the political and cultural anxieties provoked by the rapid modernization of Europe. Using personal narratives, she combines a powerfully human account of the war an its aftermath with a disturbing ethical enquiry into its legacy for the 21st century."--BOOK JACKET.

The 1931 Spanish Republic antagonised the Catholic Church by expanding the education system, the large landowners by instituting a land reform, the army by reducing the number of top officers, the capitalists and the bien-peasants by introducing social reforms. Five hundred years of obscurantism and ill-gotten privilege struck in July 1936 in what was not a civil war but a military coup against the peoples of Spain, the expression of a class struggle by the top brass of the army, acting on behalf of those powerful interests - the oligarchy. The Spanish people resisted. 431 anti-Fascists from Emilia-Romagna, the region of Bologna, and 65 Australians felt bound to join their fight. This is their story, told against a rich historical background, dealing with the fundamental problems facing the Republic, the intervention of Nazi and Fascist forces and the feigned 'non-intervention' by Britain and France which only made Franco's 'Crusading' victory possible, through history's first aerial bombing of civilian populations: Guernica by the Nazis, Barcelona by the Fascists. The Pope sent his blessing. This book tells a story not of 'heroic deeds', but of conscious self-sacrifice in support of 'democracy's solidarity and universality'. It identifies as many as possible of those volunteers, lists all of them, narrates their long nightmare, culminating in a retreat of 500,000 children, women and men into France, by foot, in the snow, over the Pyrenees, attempting to escape the pursuing Moors who had been promised the women to rape and the men to castrate. The book documents the struggle of the Spanish soldiers and partisans on the side of the Allies in World War Two, of which Spain was the anteroom. Their sacrifice remained unrewarded. After Franco's death, Falangism - Spanish Fascism - was able to dictate the terms of the 'transition to democracy', the same 'non-interventionists' imposed the restoration of the Bourbons, an electoral system which permanently excludes many forces of the Left from government participation, and an amnesty and a 'pact of silence' which are now used against courageous magistrates intent on investigating the 'disappearance' of at least 114,266 persons summarily executed after the war. In April 2010 Judge Garzon is under investigation for attempting to inquire into those crimes, which cannot be subject to amnesty because they are crimes against humanity as defined by the United Nations and even by Spanish domestic law. The book deals with that, and the tribulations of 'universal jurisdiction' under pressure of yesterday's 'great and powerful friends', in a long chapter examining the conflict between a 'pact of forgetting' and the 'duty of memory'.

Hitler And Spain written by Robert H. Whealey and has been published by University Press of Kentucky this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-12-01 with Social Science categories.

The Spanish Civil War, begun in July 1936, was a preliminary round of World War II. Hitler's and Mussolini's cooperation with General Franco resulted in the Axis agreement of October 1936 and the subsequent Pact of Steel of May 1939, immediately following the end of the Civil War. This study presents comprehensive documentation of Hitler's use of the upheaval in Spain to strengthen the Third Reich diplomatically, ideologically, economically, and militarily. While the last great cause drew all eyes to Western Europe and divided the British and especially the French internally, Hitler could pursue territorial gains in Eastern Europe. This book, based on little-known German records and recently opened Spanish archives, fills a major gap in our understanding of one of the 20th century's most significant conflicts. Its comprehensive treatment of German-Spanish relations from 1936 through 1939, bringing together diplomatic, economic, military, and naval aspects, will be of great value to specialists in European diplomacy and the political economy of Nazi imperialism, as well as to all students of the Spanish Civil War.

Unlikely Warriors written by Richard Baxell and has been published by Aurum this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-06 with Fiction categories.

When a Nationalist military uprising was launched in Spain in July 1936, the Spanish Republic’s desperate pleas for assistance from the leaders of Britain and France fell on deaf ears. Appalled at the prospect of another European democracy succumbing to fascism, volunteers from across the Continent and beyond flocked to Spain’s aid, many to join the International Brigades. More than 2,500 of these men and women came from Britain, Ireland and the Commonwealth, and contrary to popular myth theirs was not an army of adventurers, poets and public school idealists. Overwhelmingly they hailed from modest working class backgrounds, leaving behind their livelihoods and their families to fight in a brutal civil war on foreign soil. Some 500 of them never returned home. In this inspiring and moving oral history, Richard Baxell weaves together a diverse array of testimony to tell the remarkable story of the Britons who took up arms against General Franco. Drawing on his own extensive interviews with survivors, research in archives across Britain, Spain and Russia, as well as first-hand accounts by writers both famous and unknown, Unlikely Warriors presents a startling new interpretation of the Spanish Civil War and follows a band of ordinary men and women who made an extraordinary choice.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The Spanish Civil War began with a military coup in 1936. It was the result of the extremely uneven levels of development that existed in Spain by the 1930s. The war was fought between the elements that clashed in the pre-war domestic environment: urban culture and cosmopolitan lifestyles versus rural tradition, secular versus religious, authoritarianism versus liberal political cultures, and so on. #2 The loss of Spain’s empire in 1898 deprived the country of its protected external markets, which kick-started an intermittent and acrimonious debate over how Spain should modernize itself economically. The arguments in favor of domestic reform made by Spain’s more progressive industrial elites made little headway. #3 Spain was the country that was the least affected by the demands of the war. Rural and provincial Spain was serviced by the populations of agrarian or market towns, which were inhabited by a conservative middle class. The Church hierarchy clung to monarchy not least to stave off the consequences of liberalizing politics and culture. #4 In urban Spain, the First World War was the catalyst for social change. The war produced a economic boom, but it also produced severe forms of inflation and dislocation that greatly affected poorer segments of society.
