The Last Stop Safari Shop is a beautiful ode to Africa. It is set in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Tanzania in the late 1980's and 1990's. It charts the lives of Marius, an interior designer from Cape Town who hesitantly accepts a job decorating safari lodges in Tanzania. Astrid, a young Swiss woman who is disappointed when she arrives in Tanzania as all she sees on her journey from the airport are donkeys, dogs and vervet monkeys. No lion or elephant - not what she was anticipating at all. Evelyn, a Rhodesian war widow, returns to Zimbabwe after exiling herself in Somerset, England to help her brother-in-law and his wife with their rhino conservation. By digging deep and finding their inner resources, paths cross, and unlikely friendships are formed. Under the transformative power of the 'Africa-ness' of Africa, all three individuals begin to heal and embrace their lives. Excerpt from the book Evelyn walked towards the cluster of flame lilies, each one a cup of flickering scarlet edged with trickling gold, growing up from the deep, rich, red African soil. She bent down gently stretched her arms around them, just able to touch her fingers together, and breathed in deeply. The smell of green ... only here on this land.

Delia Akeley And The Monkey written by Iain McCalman and has been published by Upswell this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-02-01 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

By telling this story, Iain McCalman illuminates much about human-animal relations and the tyranny of gender inequality. He reinstates a twentieth century story of a dedicated amateur primatologist and her adopted Vervet monkey. On an East-African hunting expedition in 1909, Delia Akeley, a forty-year-old American woman, captured a baby female monkey. Delia's loneliness in an isolating patriarchal world, and her long-frustrated desire to adopt a child, had motivated her to nurture the animal. She named the monkey JT Jr and decided to study her interactions with humans. The unique relationship between Delia and JT unlocked Delia's latent talents of research and observation, anticipating both Jane Goodall's chimpanzee writings and Margaret Mead's Samoan ethnographies. However, Delia's love for JT clashed with her husband Carl's obsession to create a temple of African wildlife dioramas at the Museum of Natural History in New York. Nursing Carl's broken body and realising their diverging interests pushed Delia into a breakdown in Uganda, which led to a savage divorce in Manhattan, and the heartbreaking caging of JT in a Washington zoo. Carl's death triggered a long battle between Delia and Carl's widow, who succeeded in obliterating most of Delia's achievements. In Delia Akeley and the Monkey, Iain McCalman uses official records and personal documents to build a story of passionate love and hate among women, men, animals and museums that predates our times but speaks to our present. It illuminates much about human-animal relations and the tyranny of gender inequality, through reinstating an obscured story of a dedicated amateur primatologist.

The Meth Lunches written by Kim Foster and has been published by St. Martin's Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-10-10 with Social Science categories.

James Beard Award–winning author Kim Foster reveals a new portrait of hunger and humanity in America. Food is a conduit for connection; we envision smiling families gathered around a table—eating, happy, content. But what happens when poverty, mental illness, homelessness, and addiction claim a seat at that table? In The Meth Lunches, Kim Foster peers behind the polished visions of perfectly curated dinners and charming families to reveal the complex reality when poverty and food intersect. Whether it’s heirloom vegetables or a block of neon-yellow government cheese, food is both a basic necessity and a nuanced litmus test: what and how we eat reflects our communities, our cultures, and our place in the world. The Meth Lunches gives a glimpse into the lives of people living in Foster’s Las Vegas community—the grocery store cashier who feels safer surrounded by food after surviving a childhood of hunger; the inmate baking a birthday cake with coffee creamer and Sprite; the unhoused woman growing scallions in the slice of sunlight on her passenger seat. This is what food looks like in the lives of real people. The Meth Lunches reveals stories of dysfunction intertwined with hope, of the insurmountable obstacles and fierce determination all playing out on the plates of ordinary Americans. It’s a bold invitation to pull up a chair and reconsider our responsibilities to the most vulnerable among us. Welcome to the table.
