Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: June 21, 1923 AT special meetings held about five months ago with groups of elders in the British mission, three leading principles were set forth, the adopting of which seemed essential to the proper advancement of the work of the Lord in the various conferences. These were Responsibility, Unity, and Activity. All three of these virtues, it was thought, were applicable alike to mission aries and to the local Church membership. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: June 7, 1923 Elder Richard R. Lyman spoke of the marvelous foresight of President Brigham Young when he said in this valley, This is the place. Elder Lyman said that this probably is not the place to make the most money, nor is it the place of greatest luxury. But, he declared, this is the place where are produced the best men and women in the world. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: March 8, 1923 A short but thoughtful article from the pen of the Rev. J. Newland-smith in a parish magazine which fell into the writer's hands some little time. Ago, contained a paragraph which gave a clear illustration of the manner in which the moral idea has steadily progressed and advanced from one period of the world's history to another until men had become sufficiently enlightened to receive the more lofty and perfect law, as expounded by our Lord himself, of loving one's neighbor as one's self, and doing unto others as we would wish them to do unto us; and inasmuch as it throws considerable light upon the subject under consider ation, the writer ventures to quote that paragraph here in full. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: November 8, 1923 Elder Melvin J. Ballard, the next speaker, said he had asked himself what was the primary purpose of the Lord in revealing the existence of the Book of Mormon. He had thought of the great comfort contained therein for believers, and then he had thought of the more definite word of the Lord. He read from the Doctrine and Covenants wherein the Loni gives the purpose explicitly, to the effect that the descendants of Lehi in the last dispensation shall know their heritage and the blessings that shall he theirs. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: February 15, 1923 When I was about sixteen years of age I became possessed of a very strong desire to see other countries. My mind was directed towards New Zealand but seeing an advertisement in a Canadian newspaper, I applied for the position and secured it. Twelve years next March I sailed from Liverpool on the Empress of Ireland. My destination was Cardston, in the Province of Alberta. I knew nothing whatever concerning the town or its inhabitants. I cannot describe my feelings - feelings of surprise and disappointment - wi]en I found myself in a Mormon com munity. This brought about a bad attack of home-sickness, and if I had had the means I would have at once returned to England. When my people heard the news, they were almost as greatly alarmed as they would have been if they had heard that I had been cast off on an island inhabited by cannibals. I decided, however, to make the best of the situation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: April 26, 1923 In this connection may be mentioned an interesting report which has only just appeared in the Continental Daily Mail ot' the 27th March last, on the subject of motor fuel being manufactured from rubbish, tons of waste material being annually dealt with to produce about half a million gallons of alcohol, suitable for motor spirit and acetic acid. The raw material in this case is said to be the waste hops which brewers have to pay to have carted away. The newspaper article closes by stating that apart from the motor spirit yielded, some cubic feet of gas suitable for internal combustion engines is included in the treatment of a ton of waste material. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: February 1, 1923 Here a digression is made to request our readers to think out a Yankee-like guess as to how many of the boys about fifteen years of age with whom they are acquainted would have con ducted themselves as modestly and sensibly as Joseph Smith did, had they been in his circumstances and tempted as he was Does it not appeal to us all as true that the average boy of that age would give way to unbearable pride and egotism 'p The writer is of the opinion that but few boys out of a multitude would con tent themselves for a single day longer to engage in the drudgery of farm life or endure uncomplainingly the hardships of a common laborer's toil. The average boy, we confidently say, would not do it; but since Joseph Smith did do it, there is in that fact all the evidences needed to make him occupy a position in the view of all clear-visioned people as a boy far above the average in some of the leading essentials of a strong and noble character. All, however, that has heretofore been said in these remarks concerning the powerful temptations which Joseph Smith had to meet and overcome, if he was not to become puffed up with in ordinate vain-glory and conceit, and obsessed with thoughts of his tremendous importance among the mighty ones of this earth is not all that is be said along this same line. Through them God will work out his mighty plans, many of which are not yet disclosed; and the kingdom of God will roll on and the truth will be triumph ant and darkness will be banished and the reign of evil will cease. Satan will be bound and his hosts with him, and the wicked will not continue to flourish. The righteous will prevail and the king dom and government of God which he has set up will cover the earth until the very earth itself having filled the law of its being, will be resurrected and clothed upon with the glory of God, and Christ will be its king. God bless you, brethren and sisters. May His peace abide with you and be in your homes, surround your homes with everything that is good, bright, lovely and comfortable. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: September 27, 1923 The whole career of the Prophet teaches us that whenever he desired wisdom and understanding concerning the work where unto he had been called, he sought the Lord through prayer; furthermore, that the work of the Lord and the laying of its foundations were not the acts of a moment, but of growth directed of the Lord, and that the Prophet was to grow with it. As witness to this, we have first the heavenly vision, followed by a number of years of experience; then the visit of the angel Moroni, with certain promises concerning the revealing of the Priesthood and the coming of Elijah to confer the keys that would be for the salvation of the living and the dead and furthermore, the revealing of the hidden plates of the Book of Mormon; then four years of education before these plates were delivered; then nearly three years before they were translated. Finally the Priesthood was restored, the Church organized, and the keys of the gathering were committed, and other fundamentals attended to pertaining to the establishment of the marvelous work and a wonder which was about to come forth. Some of us are prone to think that the work of the Lord should progress more rapidly, that purposes should happen as they are revealed but we should remember the lesson in the life of Joseph, that before the will of God can be done among men, there must be a preparation of those through whom it is to be done. Are we willing to make the sacrifice that shall give us that preparation The Lord is willing and anxious that His work shall grow, he requires that we shall seek Him in prayer and prepare ourselves to accomplish what He has given us to do. And the Prophet has set us a wonderful example in this respect. He asked the Lord what to do. The Lord told him, then he faithfully set about to perform his tasks.
