The Laughter Is On My Side written by Søren Kierkegaard and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989 with Philosophy categories.

Here is an engaging alternative to the more solemn introductions to Sren Kierkegaard that are currently available: The Laughter Is on My Side entices us into Kierkegaard's way of looking at the world. Skillfully clearing a path to the heart of Kierkegaard's writings for those who may be unfamiliar with the great Danish thinker, Roger Poole and Henrik Stangerup rearrange some of his most pleasurable and most readable passages to form an entertaining "text-narrative"--not a selection in the ordinary sense but an innovative presentation that tells a new story. The book replaces the inaccessible Kierkegaard of philosophical legend with an ironic, witty, shrewdly observant writer, writing for the amusement of writing, and not for the grimmer satisfactions of instructing or upbraiding. Above all, the Kierkegaard revealed by Poole and Stangerup becomes, in the deepest sense, our contemporary. Taking its title from the young Kierkegaard's nickname, "The Fork," the first section of the work is full of urbane and erotic materials and has much to say about his famous broken engagement to Regine Olsen. A section called "Women" will be of special interest to feminists, particularly the three discourses from the Symposium section of Stages on Life's Way. "The Midnight Hour" presents Kierkegaard's most anguished and existential passages: "Do you not know there comes a midnight hour when everyone has to throw off his mask? Do you think you can slip away a little before midnight in order to avoid this?" Lastly, "1848 : 1984" presents Kierkegaard as an incisive and relevant political thinker in a way that has never been attempted before.

I WAS DELIGHTED TO RECEIVE THIS NEW SUBMISSION BY Dr. Daniel Keller. The Laughter Factor presents laughter and humor as a form of therapy. The author claims laughter is essential to the emotions, the body and soul, and the survival of civilization. We all know that 'laughter is the best medicine' and Dr. Keller succeeds in proving this theory in his book. Humor is at the core of a whole and healthy personality. Kellar adroitly describes the healing power of laughter -- based on case studies from individual and group therapy sessions. He notes that we, as humans, neglect the power of laughter in our lives by taking humor for granted. We ignore the healthy impact of a "good" hearty laugh on the body: What happens, when our cheeks blush and our belly shakes the spasm of a guffaw, is more than a good feeling. Our vocal cords are sounding an elixir as old as Solomon's praise of a 'merry heart.' And modern medicine tells us that we are measurably cleansing our somatic pores. We now know that laughter catalyzes the endocrine system. Our pituitary gland releases pain-reducing chemicals. Endorphins and enkephalins trigger the sensation of pleasure. With a clear and lucid style, Keller offers the reader a wealth of information that applies humor to therapy, laughter, and life as a preventative medicine of salvific proportions. This makes for insightful and entertaining reading. Dan Kellers book touches what I felt when I wrote One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. Both I and Randall Patrick McMurphy suggest you read it. -- Ken Kesey Kellers book reminds us that laughter is the best medicine, far better than a dose of medicine. I recommend The Laughter Factor without a single reservation. -- Virginia Durr Dr. Keller writes about humor with humor. He proves his point in story after story that humor really does make a difference. -- Conrad Hyers I am delighted to see a book of the caliber Dan Keller has written on the role of humor in psychotherapy. I believe its value will be in the stories it tells. -- Gerald Piaget Kellers work is masterful. It probes the light side of life, and the philanthropic justice of laughter. -- Tonea Stewart Keller reminds us that when we go off the rails, laughter picks us up and puts us back on track. The Laughter Factor is a terrific book. -- David Bouchier One may judge the importance of a book partly in terms of content and partly in terms of need. On both counts Dr. Kellers The Laughter Factor is important. There is a dearth of literature available to the psychotherapist that applies humor theory to humor therapy. Anyone who has done counseling surely senses that humor on the part of both therapist and client can be a significant ingredient in the healing process, yet few have given the matter systematic reflection and application. Freud made a preliminary effort in this direction in his Wit and the Unconscious, and Keller draws upon his study; but many aspects of the subject remained to be developed, especially the uses of humor by the counselor and client. The Laughter Factor corrects this lacuna in our knowledge. Before Freud, none other than the great American therapist Mark Twain credited healing powers to humor (and to his profession) when he wrote in Tom Sawyer of the old man who laughed joyously and loud, shook up the details of his anatomy from head to foot, saying that such a laugh was money in a mans pocket because it cut down the doctors bills like everything! That, in essence, is what Kellers book is about, including a chapter on recent research indicating the various positive effects of shaking up the details of ones anatomy from head to foot in hearty laughter. A book that might profitably be read in conjunction with Kellers book is Ken Keseys One Flew Over the Cu

Romantic Poets And The Laughter Of Feeling written by Matthew Ward and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-05-07 with Literary Criticism categories.

The Romantic period witnessed decisive interest in how feeling might align with forms of artistic expression. Many critical studies have focused on the serious side and melancholic moods of Romantic poets. Romantic Poets and the Laughter of Feeling instead embraces the sublime and the ridiculous to offer an original and compelling new reading of British Romanticism. It reveals the decisive role laughter and the laughable play in Romantic aesthetics, emotions, and ethics. Matthew Ward shows that laughter was one of the primary means by which Romantics embraced and expanded upon, but also frequently aped and lampooned, sympathetic feeling. The laughter of feeling is both the expression of sympathy and an articulation of its implications, prejudices, and constraints. For Romantic poets like Wordsworth, Shelley, and Keats, the sound of laughter carries the hope that greater knowledge of others derives from feeling for and with them through poetry, and this might lead to a better understanding of oneself. Yet laughter also makes these poets acutely aware that our emotional lives are utterly unfamiliar and perhaps ultimately unknowable. Their prosody of laughter enlivens and exposes; it embodies their sense of?and ambitions for?poetry, and yet calls those matters into the most comical and gravest doubt. Laughter helps define what it is to be human. This book shows that it also defines what it is to be a 'Romantic' poet.

You must ask yourself one very important question: Why give up the drug and maintain the behavior? I suspect that we look to the drug of our choice; whether it is pills, alcohol, another person or even the behavior itself as the problem, when it isn’t. I suspect that the problem is the drama involved. The drug we use to access that emotional life is secondary to the fact that we subconsciously feel the need to be drawn into an emotional life. Once we know what draws us into the drama and our actual addiction to it – so much so that we willingly create it in our everyday lives via our “drug†of choice – then it loses its power over us.What it really boils down to is simply growing up and taking responsibility for our actions and for our lives.Imagine the many splendid things that we miss because of the superfluous drama with which we fill our lives.Think about it…

We cannot really love anybody with whom we never laugh, and this is true of our relationship with God. Thomas Aquinas spoke of the sin of having too little laughter as well as the danger of having too much, while Martin Luther said, ‘If you’re not allowed to laugh in heaven, I don’t want to go there.’ Having a sense of humour is essential for maturity in faith and holiness, but sadly, the role that laughter plays in life and spirituality have often been neglected. Laughter and the Grace of God restores laughter to its central place in Christian spirituality and theology by examining its role in Scripture and highlighting its presence in unexpected places, including the story of Abraham and the formation of the covenant, and the tragedy of Job. Laughter can be found in the incarnation, the resurrection, and even the crucifixion – Jesus is himself the great laugh-maker – and it is nothing less than a participation in the life and love of God.

Satirist William Hone is the forgotten hero of the British press. In 1817 he was forced to defend himself against a censorious government, in what amounted to a show trial pitting a self-educated Fleet Street journalist against the Lord Chief Justice and a hand-picked jury. Hone's crime was to ridicule the powers that be. Through Hone's life, Ben Wilson looks at the history of the struggle for free expression against repressive law.
