Excerpt from The Law of Human Progress Man everywhere and at all times exhibits this faculty - everywhere and at all times of which we have knowledge he has made some use of it. But the degree in which this has been done greatly varies. Between the rude canoe and the steamship; between the boomerang and the repeating rifle; between the roughly carved wooden idol and the breathing mar ble of Grecian art; between savage knowledge and modern science; between the wild Indian and the white settler; between the Hottentot woman and the belle of polished society, there is an enormous difference. Excerpt from The Laws of Human Progress and Modern Reforms: A Lecture Delivered Before the Mercantile Library Association of the City of New-York The laws of progress then, come under three gene ral heads: the nature of man; his condition, i. E., in the material world; and his social, including his politi cal relations. The first law of progress, therefore, is moral free dom. Call this man's birthright or not - say or deny that all men are born to be free, -one thing is certain, there cannot be one step in human progress without this condition. And it is only from what is inevitably left of freedom to the very serf and slave, that he makes any progress. More in fact is left, than we always consider, or than our current language always admits. Free will, free thought, may be in many ways injuriously checked; but it cannot be extinguished in any human being; if it were, it would be, not slavery, but death to him as a man. And as faras' any institu tion, any authority, any religion, any government crushes down this freedom, its stops the growth of men and communities. Excerpt from Letters on the Laws of Man's Nature and Development It will at once occur to every considerate reader, that to establish by evidence and argument the facts and conclusions contained in these Letters would require many volumes. If we put out only one, its contents must be merely expository; and such, and nothing more, is the character of this volume. It has neither the compass, nor the order, nor the rela tive proportion, of a treatise. I believe that it has substance and connection enough to make it of value in its actual shape. Such as it is, we send it forth in the hope that we shall be corrected where we are wrong, enlightened Where we are dim or blind, and sympathized with by those who estimate truth and freedom as we do. Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Excerpt from The Source and Aim of Human Progress Ingoing and outgoing nerve currents with their various end reactions may be modified by the nerve centers. Nerve currents may be intensified, decreased in energy, or even entirely inhibited by central ganglia or by their mutual interaction and interferences. Sherrington and other physiologists have by a number of experiments formulated some of the important principles of such physiological activities. The law of inhibition or interference early formulated by Ziehen may suffice: If an excitation of a definite intensity (m) take place in one cortical element (b), and another excitation of a different intensity take place at the same time in another cortical element (c) which is connected by a path of conduction with element (b), the' two intensi ties of excitation may modify each other. Although such modifications frequently occur, it nevertheless remains true that the inferior nerve-centers are of a re ex nature. Excerpt from The Theory of Human Progression Tax. To this end the parts of the work upon the owner ship of natural resources, and kindred topics, are given nearly in full, the metaphysical parts, on the other hand, being given only with sufficient completeness to induce those readers who are interested in the philosophy of progress to have recourse to the original for themselves. Our author shows clearly that land is naturally com mon property and that the failure to see this and to ad just our system of political economy to its truth is the supreme cause of poverty with all the suffering and degra dation that poverty entails.
