Discussions of music teacher change and curricular reform often a) imply the presence of an agentive teacher self who can be instilled with the ability to change and b) underestimate the emotional power of experiential, often tacit, images of teaching and learning (Ritchie & Wilson, 2000). In this qualitative, teacher-research study, I investigated my own teaching as I tried to teach with a social constructivist view of learning in my high school choral classroom. Initially, I collected recordings of class sessions to analyze them for themes reflective of the learners' experiences in my classroom. Analyzing, I was struck by inconsistencies between what I claimed to believe about teaching and the practice I was seeing in the data. I then collected a second data set and shifted my focus to a study of myself as an experienced school choral conductor attempting to change my teaching. The study became as much about finding my voice and agency as a musician-conductor engaged in research as it was about my voice and agency as a teacher trying to change. I analyzed both data sets by improvisationally adapting processes that felt familiar to me as a musician and conductor. Only later did I discover their similarity to well-traveled interdisciplinary paths within the borders of practitioner inquiry, narrative inquiry, autoethnography, and arts-based research. To help surface my tacit understandings about the nature of music learning and teaching, I wrote narrative autobiographical reflections retelling significant musical memories in my life. Studying the data through the lens of the understandings I developed through this process, I realized that my hidden understandings and beliefs about school music ensembles were difficult to address because they were held in place with strong webs of "feelingful knowing" (Broudy, 1979, p. 3). As a result, I found that re-learning to teach, as with all learning, is a profoundly social, inescapably emotional, constructive process that entails a re-scripting and re-performing of our identity into social spaces subject to forces of isolation, marginalization, vulnerability, risk, and our own tacit, embodied understandings of teachers and teaching.
