Follow the adventures of a likeable, smart, 17-year-old, steamboat cabin boy, Niall MacCarthy, in this historical mystery/romance inspired by actual events. He is put ashore in 1880, in the river town of Cairo, IL after his first cigar makes him so sick that he can't do his work that day. He witnesses a murder and learns the approximate whereabouts of a sunken strongbox, but he will need to invent a method to find and recover it from the murky depths. While dodging harm from town roughnecks, Niall provides critical assistance to the thirteen-year-old daughter of John D. Rockefeller after she falls from her horse in town. He meets a pretty farm girl, Sarah Baily, who steals his heart. Though she has limited schooling, Sarah is highly intelligent and reveals her amazing mathematical prowess to Niall by her daily work on the farm. The visit of former President Ulysses S. Grant creates opportunities and challenges. Humor abounds as Niall's creativity is tested in the pursuit of the strongbox and his new love, though a violent criminal threatens disaster. The story incorporates historically accurate details about Cairo, President Grant's visit, John D. Rockefeller, his daughter Bessie, as well as actual wealthy citizens of Cairo in the 1880s, such as members of the Halliday and Galigher families.

Martin Metzger is a German farmer who travels with his wife and eight children in 1846 to settle in mid-America. They are nearly trapped between the Mexican and United States armies in Texas. Based on actual events, the family travels from New Orleans up the Mississippi River by steamboat while gradually learning how to work and live in America where slavery exists in some states, multiple paper currencies circulate, opportunities abound, love beckons, and dangers lurk. The successes and challenges of three generations of the family in Illinois are chronicled (Martin, his son John, and his son Arthur), as national historical developments become entwined with events in the family. John is bright and draws the attention of prominent politicians, including Abraham Lincoln. John must decide how best to contribute to the Union’s war effort, and he becomes a wealthy businessman and co-founder and president of an insurance company. His son, Arthur, faces challenges growing up in the shadow of his illustrious father as he must navigate disruptive changes in the family and the Depression. In 1901, fifteen-year-old Eilish knows vital clues (left in the family Bible by her mother) to the location of a valuable treasure. Trusting no one, she must solve the clues to recover the treasure while avoiding violent criminals, resolving police suspicions about her, and completing her education at the University of Chicago. The saga of the Metzgers proves that truth may be stranger than fiction, while the tale of clever, kind Eilish illustrates the challenges faced by bright, young women in the first decade of the twentieth century.

Western Kentucky has always had a dark side, despite being the "Birthplace of Bluegrass Music." Mary James Trotter, an arrested moonshine-selling grandma, remarked to a judge that she "simply had to sell a little liquor now and then to take care of my four grandchildren." Rod Ferrell led a bloodsucking vampire cult in Murray, Kentucky, and traumatized parents of the 1990s. In the early morning of July 13, 1928, at the "Castle on the Cumberland," seven men were put to death in Kentucky's deadliest night of state-sponsored executions. Join award-winning author Richard Parker as he takes you on a journey through fifteen of Western Kentucky's most nefarious people, places and events.

In 1807, twelve-year-old Andy Murphy's uncle, Captain Fred Murphy, finally comes through on a promise he made four years ago. Andy has finally been invited to be the cabin boy on his uncle's square-rigged cargo vessel, Java Sea. From the time the ship leaves Baltimore until it returns, carrying cargo to South American ports-of-call, Andy is exposed to an entirely new world. As the adventure unfolds, daily duties such as working in the galley and learning new skills like triangulation-figuring distances with a compass and a known triangle base line-keep Andy continually on the alert. Life aboard a tall ship is very different from the farm life he left behind. Yet Andy becomes a favorite of the older crewmen, developing strong bonds of friendship with his fellow sailors. When Captain Murphy agrees to take an English Naval Officer and his family to Halifax, Andy is presented with the opportunity for a whole new adventure that could eventually change the course of his life. Will the pull of the tide be too much for Andy to resist, or does his heart belong on the farm with his family?
