As the Holocaust recedes from us in time, the guardianship of its legacy is being passed on from its survivors and witnesses to the generation after. How should we, in turn, convey its knowledge to others? What are the effects of a traumatic past on its inheritors, and the second generation's responsibilities to its received memories? Eva Hoffman probes these questions through personal reflections and through broader explorations of the historical, psychological and moral implications of the second-generation experience. She examines the subterranean processes through which private memories of suffering are transmitted, and the more wilful stratagems of collective memory. As she guides us through the poignant juncture at which living memory must be relinquished, she asks what insights can be carried from the past, and urges the need to transform potent family stories into a fully-informed understanding of a forbidding history.

Contains excerpts from papers delivered at the international conference "The Legacy of Holocaust Survivors - the Moral and Ethical Implications for Humanity", held by Yad Vashem's International School for Holocaust Studies, in association with the Center of Organizations of Holocaust Survivors in Israel, in Jerusalem in April 2002. The excerpts are arranged in four groups: Legacy, Faith, Memory, and Antisemitism. The latter category includes one six-page extract in which Per Ahlmark stresses that non-Jews, like himself, also have a duty to resist antisemitism and that dangerous antisemites want a world without a Jewish state. The other participants were Aharon Appelfeld, Walter Zwi Bacharach, Aharon Barak, Emil Fackenheim, Israel Gutman, Moshe Halbertal, Imre Kertesz, Beate and Serge Klarsfeld, Israel Meir Lau, Limor Livnat, Michael McGarry, Michael Melchior, Sallai Meridor, Samuel Pisar, Moshe Sanbar, Avner Shalev, Israel Singer, Simone Veil, and Elie Wiesel.

The Legacy Of The Holocaust written by Robert M. Prince and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1985 with History categories.

In this first paperbound release of the 1985 book, Prince, a professor of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy at New York University and a child of Holocaust survivors, investigates the lives of children of survivors, emphasizing the complexity of the intergenerational transmission of trauma. Using three case studies, "a powerful sufferer," "a Nazi fighter," and "a Jewish American princess," he argues that the Holocaust had a tremendous impact on every life it touched and that these effects manifest in every aspect of "personhood--in personality styles; in preferred modes of interpersonal relationships; in relationships to parents; in attitudes, ideas, and beliefs; [and] in Jewish identification."Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

An international group of psychoanalysts and film scholars address the enduring emotional legacy of the Holocaust in Cinematic Reflections on the Legacy of the Holocaust: Psychoanalytic Perspectives. Particular focus is given to how second and third generation survivors have explored and confronted the psychic reverberations of Holocaust trauma in cinema. This book focuses on how film is particularly suited to depict Holocaust experiences with vividness and immediacy. The similarity of moving images and sound to our dream experience allows access to unconscious processing. Film has the potential to reveal the vast panorama of Holocaust history as well as its intrapsychic reverberations. Yet despite the recent prominence of Holocaust films, documentaries and TV series as well as scholarly books and memoirs, these works lack a psychoanalytic optic that elucidates themes such as the repetition compulsion, survival guilt, disturbances in identity and disruption of mourning that are underlying leitmotifs. Cinematic Reflections on the Legacy of the Holocaust: Psychoanalytic Perspectives will be of great interest to psychoanalysts and therapists as well as to scholars in trauma, film and Jewish studies. It is also of interest to those concerned with the prevention of genocide and mass atrocities and their long terms effects.
