This book deals with the Lemkos, the East Slavic population which formerly inhabited the Southeast corner of today's Poland. The Lemkos massively immigrated to North America before 1914. Those who remained and survived the huge battles on the Carpathian Front in World War One settled in to rebuild their lives between the wars, but World War II and its aftermath were great blows to the Lemko people. Nearly all were either deported to the Soviet Ukraine (1944-1946) or forcibly resettled in Northern and Western Poland (1947-1951) in a thorough ethnic cleansing of the Carpathian Mountain region. Today, both in North America and in Europe, Lemkos are attempting to recover their heritage. It is hoped that this book will in some small way assist in that endeavor.

The Lemko are a small band of East Slavic highlanders who for centuries have inhabited the northern slopes of the Carpathian Mountains. Unable to control their political fate, these folk have spent their entire history under foreign rule and divided among competing ideologies. After World War II, the Lemko were forcibly resettled across the Ukraine and western and northern territories of Poland. Nevertheless, they continue to utilize vernacular speech and practice the rich cultural traditions of their ancestors. The story of the Lemkos and their remarkable ethnic survival is relayed in this book, the first comprehensive reference on this group and their region. Featuring more than 5,000 bibliographic citations, the volume describes the geology, geography, flora, fauna, and climate of the Lemko region. It discusses access to materials and resources, and recounts in detail the history, industry, religion, language, education, literature, and culture of this enduring society. The book concludes with an analysis of the Lemko's current political and cultural situation.

Historical Dictionary Of Ukraine written by Ivan Katchanovski and has been published by Scarecrow Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-07-11 with History categories.

Although present-day Ukraine has only been in existence for something over two decades, its recorded history reaches much further back for more than a thousand years to Kyivan Rus’. Over that time, it has usually been under control of invaders like the Turks and Tatars, or neighbors like Russia and Poland, and indeed it was part of the Soviet Union until it gained its independence in 1991. Today it is drawn between its huge neighbor to the east and the European Union, and is still struggling to choose its own path… although it remains uncertain of which way to turn. Nonetheless, as one of the largest European states, with considerable economic potential, it is not a place that can be readily overlooked. The problem is, or at least was, where to find information on this huge modern Ukraine, and since 2005 the answer has been the Historical Dictionary of Ukraine in its first edition, and now even more so with this second edition. It now boasts a dictionary section of about 725 entries, these covering the thousand years of history but particularly the recent past, and focusing on significant persons, places and events, political parties and institutions as well as more broadly international relations, the economy, society and culture. The chronology permits readers to follow this history and the introduction is there to make sense of it. It also features the most extensive and up-to-date bibliography of English-language writing on Ukraine.

The Lemko Region of the Carpathian Mountains of Central Europe has been inhabited by East Slavic people for centuries. For nearly as long, it has been the arena of intense ethnopolitical competition. This collection of sketches illuminates how Lemkos' reaction to competing nationalist pressures led them to an identity centered on Eastern Orthodox Christianity.
