The encounter between knight and science could seem a paradox. It is nonetheless related with the intellectual Renaissance of Twelfth-Century, an essential movement for Western history. The knight is not only fighting in battles, but also moving in sophisticated courts. He is interested on Latin classics and reading, and even on his own poetry. He supports "jongleurs" and minstrels and he likes to have literary conversations with clerics, who try to reform his behaviour, which is often brutal. These lettered warriors, while improving they culture, learn how to repress their own violence and they are initiated to courtesy: selected language, measured gestures, elegance in dress, and manners at table. Their association with women, who are often learned, becomes more gallant. A mental revolution is acting among lay elites, who, in contact with clergy, use their weapons for common welfare. This new conduct is a sign of modernity.

From Ethan Hawke, four-time Academy Award nominee—twice for writing and twice for acting—an unforgettable fable about a father's journey and a timeless guide to life's many questions. A knight, fearing he may not return from battle, writes a letter to his children in an attempt to leave a record of all he knows. In a series of ruminations on solitude, humility, forgiveness, honesty, courage, grace, pride, and patience, he draws on the ancient teachings of Eastern and Western philosophy, and on the great spiritual and political writings of our time. His intent: to give his children a compass for a journey they will have to make alone, a short guide to what gives life meaning and beauty.

The medieval mounted knight was a fearsome weapon of war, captivating and horrifying in equal measure, they are a continuing source of fascination. They have been both held up as a paragon of chivalry, whilst often being condemned as oppressive and violent. Occupying a unique place in history, knights on their warhorses are an enigma hidden behind their metal armor, and seemingly unreachable on their steeds. This book seeks to understand the world of the medieval knight by studying their origins, their accomplishments and their eventual decline. Forged in the death throes of the Roman Empire, the mounted knight found a place in a harsh and dangerous world where their skills and mentality carved them into history. From the First Crusade to the fields of Scotland, knights could be found, and their human side is examined to see how these men came to both rule Europe, and ride into enduring legend. The challenges facing the mounted knight were vast and deadly, from increasingly professional and competent infantry forces to gunpowder, the rise of political unity and the crunch of finance. The factors which forced the knight into the past help to define who and what they were, as well as the legacy that they have left indelibly imprinted on the world. The standout feature of this book is the focus on the equine half of the partnership, from an author who practices the arts of horsemanship on a daily basis, including combat with sword and lance. The psychology of the horse, refined by the experience of actually training warhorses, has helped the author to add to the body of academic work on the subject. This insight opens up the world of the mounted knight, and importantly and uniquely, challenges the perception of what he and his horse could really do.

The Curse of Knight's Island Alles Gute zum Geburtstag A Romance Mystery & Suspense Thriller The old woman sat there dominated by a sense of profound sadness. Fatigue etched on her worn face. She warmed her shivering hands against the crackling fire. The sorrow grew more extreme each year she spent in her quiet and lonely house. The solemn walls continued to revive the memory of her daughter's death encountered at the hands of a member of a wealthy Knight Family descendant. She stood frozen in front of her mirror and saw the deceiving hollow soul that reflected in the tear-stained looking glass. The marks left no room to see her true self any longer. All that remained was a shell of a woman, a woman wasted away. As she gazed into the mirror she reminded herself again of the curse left behind for the gruesome murder of her daughter. The curse was spoken by the old woman in the year 1567 to the man she blamed for her daughter's murder. It still echoed over many generations of the Knight Family history. "When one Knight family member spends three years on this Island, or two, unneglected, unslighted, and never regretting having come, I forgive you to the extent of my very first curse." 'When the first marriage is loveless on both sides and unselfish on both sides, may that be the last marriage on which the second curse falls!" "When someone loves life and willingly gives it for a Knight in peril, gives it without thought of other glory or reward than the thanks of a Knight, let the third curse go away." Her terrible curse, which came true for five hundred years remained unbroken. But, will our famous detective, Vincent Gideon, come out of retirement, again, finally solve the curse before it's too late? Will he lose the woman he has loved his entire life? What about his son? Will he die a violent death as predicted in the Curse? So many unanswered questions. The first edition of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley published on New Year's Day in 1818 sat on the nightstand of John Pilkington, owner of the Portland Sentinel. There was something about this novel that intrigued the old recluse. By the time this romantic suspense ends, the famed detective's friend will have read the story at least a dozen times. Why?
