This early work by Elinor Glyn was originally published in 1901 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'The Letters of her Mother to Elizabeth' is Glyn's first attempt at authorship. She was the youngest daughter of a civil engineer, Douglas Southerland, and his wife Elinor Saunders. Elinor Glyn began her writing career in 1900 and was a pioneer of the risqué and romantic fiction genre. She went on to write many popular books such as 'Beyond the Rocks' (1906), 'Love's Blindness' (1926), and 'It' (1927), in which she coined the term 'It', meaning the animal magnetism that some individuals possess.

Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Excerpt from Life and Letters of Elizabeth L. Comstock Among the early and pleasant imp ns of my childhood, are my dear mother's teachings. On one occasion, as I walked beside her along the banks of the Thames, She talked to me about the rushing river and the mighty ocean, the majestic trees and the lofty hills, and the powerful Hand that made them all of the sun, moon and stars, and the Heavenly Father, Who planned and formed, and still upholds a world So fraught with beauty, for rebellious man. A sensation of awe, accompanied by something like discouragement, came into my childish heart, which I expressed to my mother with a fear that He would not care for a little child like me when He had so many great and wonderful things to attend to. She replied by lifting me up to see a bird's nest in the hedgerow, and explaining to me that God taught the little bird to build its nest, and to rear its young and then bade me pluck a little ower at my feet, and pointed out how nothing was so small as to escape His notice, Who gave the violet its life and nourishment, its fragrance and beauty. Excerpt from Letters From Mrs. Elizabeth Carter, to Mrs. Montagu, Between the Years 1755 and 1800 Chiefly Upon Literary and Moral Subjects, Vol. 3 of 3 I am resolved not to let a post pass, my dear friend, without thanking you for your kind and welcome letter, I therefore write in defiance of a fit of the head-ach, brought on, I suppose, by the day, which is agitated by all the storms and fury of December. It made me very happy to find your health was so much mended by your change of abode, for your last letter from Paris had made me very uneasy; but I am now convinced that it was only the air of that close suffocating city which made you so ill.
