His greatest accomplishment came after his greatest disappointment. One of the founding fathers of the Renaissance, Filippo Brunelleschi was more than an Italian designer. Brunelleschi made his mark in architecture and construction. In his early years, sculpting was Brunelleschi’s passion. But after being passed over for a major commission, he set his sights on architecture, and changed the landscape of Italy as it is known today. Brunelleschi’s most prominent contribution, the dome of Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, was the first of its kind, paving the way for bigger and more elaborate domes to come. His invention of machines to facilitate the construction of the dome, allowed future structures to not only be imagined, but to be erected as well. With his imagination, understanding of linear perspective, focus on geometric principles, and intellect for mathematics, Brunelleschi influenced the rise of modern science and architecture worldwide.

'Compelling... fascinating' Spectator 'Abounding with excellent little stories' Financial Times This is the story of one of the most magnificent achievements of the Italian Renaissance, and the architect behind it. Even in an age of soaring skyscrapers and cavernous sports stadiums, the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence still retains a rare power to astonish. Yet the elegance of the building belies the tremendous labour, technical ingenuity and bitter personal strife involved in its creation. For over a century after work on the cathedral began, the proposed dome was regarded as all but impossible to build. The greatest architectural puzzle of its age, when finally completed it was hailed as one of the great wonders of the world. This book tells the extraordinary story of how the cupola was raised and of the dome's architect, the brilliant and volatile Filippo Brunelleschi. Denounced as a madman at the start of his labours, he was celebrated at their end as a great genius. His life was one of ambition, ingenuity, rivalry and intrigue - a human drama set against the plagues, wars, political feuds and intellectual ferments of Renaissance Florence, the glorious era for which the dome remains the most compelling symbol. "The Fat Woodworker" is a delightful story in the tradition of the Italian Renaissance "beffe," stories of practical, often cruel jokes. It is the tale of a prank engineered by the great Renaissance architect, Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1446), played upon an unsuspecting (and perhaps less-than-brilliant) friend and woodworker named Manetto, in reprisal for the woodworker's social slight. While the prank is indeed cruel, it is so ingenious, and the victim is so comical, that the reader soon forgets the architect's - and the author's - malice and settles in for a delightful turn as part of the unfolding conspiracy set in motion by Brunelleschi's circle of friends. The tale brings the reader into the social world of Florence's craft- and tradespeople, its lawyers and judges, artists, architects and intellectuals and gives a vibrant sense of the city's close-knit social fabric, its packed streets and busy shops and offices. It is as much a portrait of the Renaissance city as of one very befuddled and delightful woodworker. Robert and Valerie Martone provide a solid contemporary translation that carries across the ironic distance of the original. They include an introduction to the story, its author and genre, and to the social and intellectual world of Brunelleschi and Renaissance Florence. Illustrated, introduction, bibliography. Fiction

Excerpt from Filippo Di Ser Brunellesco It is very difficult to obtain enough data for an authentic life of Filippo di Ser Brunellesco. In writing the life of a painter, his own works are before us just as he painted them, and they unerringly reveal the genius and character of the man. A sculptors statues and reliefs also show us visibly his own handiwork untouched by any sacrilegious hand but the gentle one of time; the music of a composer who lived a hundred years ago, is with us still as he conceived it; and the thoughts of the poet or philosopher are embalmed in their own language within the leaves of their books. But with an architect like Brunelleschi the case is different. His designs were changed even in the hands that continued them on his death; his buildings were restored(?) by subsequent architects and incongruous bits inserted in them, like Ammannati's Roman pediments inserted to Brunelleschi's grand arched doorways in the Pitti. Beyond the Pazzi chapel and the old sacristy of San Lorenzo, which Brunelleschi finished during his lifetime, I believe there is not another work of his by which a modem critic could fairly judge his design. Thus, the works which should best illustrate his nobility of conception are now more misleading than convincing in their evidence.
