Excerpt from Immanuel Kant, His Life and Doctrine This work was written by Professor Paulsen for Frommann's Klassiker der Philosophie, and forms the seventh volume of that series. The series, which corresponds in general with Blackwood's Philosophical Classics, has been as a whole cordially welcomed in Germany, and Paulsen's Kant in particular has met with the warmest reception both from critics and from general readers of Kant's philosophy. It has been pronounced the crown of the series. The book possesses several characteristics which seem to make it especially valuable for English readers. In the first place, the author brings together and utilizes the more important results of the detailed investigations which have been carried on in Germany in recent years. Secondly, he has not restricted his account to the critical methodology, but has also treated Kant's philosophy as a whole, and has emphasized the constructive side of his metaphysics. Thus the critical and agnostic elements of Kant's thought are subordinated to a positive and idealistic metaphysic. The author's power of separating what is permanent and essen tial from what is merely external and accidental is well known to English readers through Professor Thilby's excellent translations of his Introduction to Philosophy and Ethics. This gift is nowhere more clearly manifested or its value more evident than in the present exposition of the Kantian system. Excerpt from A Study of Kant Have called this little book 'a study' because it consists Ii of a selection from notes made as a preliminary to some thing more systematic, which however now at my time of life is never likely to appear. I have decided to publish them - not without misgiving - in the hope that they may be of some use to students younger than myself. But I might not have got even this far, had I not been invited by the British Academy to deliver this year the annual Henriette Hertz Lecture on a Master Mind, and selected Immanuel Kant as my man. Excerpt from The Critical Philosophy of Immanuel Kant, Vol. 1 of 2 The object of this book is to give a connected view of the Critical Philosophy, showing the relations of the three Critiques to each other, and to the other works of Kant which may be regarded as illustrations or developments of his main argument. The first part, on the Critique of Pure Reason, deals with the same subject as my former work, entitled The Philosophy of Kant, but, except in a few passages, it is not a reproduction of it. Since the date of its publication, many important contributions to the study of Kant have been made in Germany and other countries. I wish especially to express my indebtedness to the writings of Dr. Vaihinger, Benno Erdmann, Cohen, Paulsen, Arnoldt, Stadtler, Staudinger, and Riehl; also of the late Professor Green and Professor Watson. In particular, Dr. Erdmann's publication of the Reflexionen Kant's has thrown much new light on the development of the Kantian philosophy, and Dr. Vaihinger's acute statement of the main Kantian in his Commentary is full of instruction and suggestion for every student. I have sometimes given references to these and other writers; but often I have found it impossible to recall or to trace what I owe to them, and must content myself in the main with this general acknowledgment of my obligations. I also owe much to the criticisms of my former book by various writers, particularly by Dr. Hutchison Stirling, by Mr. Balfour, and by Dr. Vaihinger; and I have attempted to meet them by giving a more careful and accurate statement of Kant's argument, and a fuller and more thorough estimate of its bearing and value. Excerpt from Metaphysical Works, of the Celebrated, Immanuel Kant, Translated From Sketch of His Life and Writings It is not augmenting the sciences, but disfiguring them, when their boundaries are allowed to encroach on one another. For which reason, and as logic is a science, wherein nothing is fully shewn and strictly proved but the formal rules of all thinking, and as we by consequence abstract in it from all objects of knowledge, as well as from their difference, our author has left us his logic free from every extraneous admixture of either ontological, or anthropological, or psychological, or metaphysical matter. Whoever has but a clear and distinct conception of the proper nature of this science, will soon discover the great difference between Kant's Logic and all former treatises on the same subject, not only by its being purer and more systematical, but, for ail its scientific strictness of method, by its being simpler, and divested of many of the tinsel trappings of mood and of figure. The translator therefore conceives himself warrantable in presenting it to the English public. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Philosophy of Kant Metaphysical Philosophy is looked upon in two different ways by two Opposite classes of thinkers. By one class it is considered as a sort of mental gymnastic, valuable in strengthening the intellectual faculties, just as physical exer cise strengthens the body; or as a sort of introduction to positive science, just as the search after the philosopher's stone and the elixir of life introduced the science of chemistry, but having no further value. If this View be the correct one, then we must look upon Plato, Descartes, Locke, Kant, and many others, as so many intellectual trainers and fencing-masters, or as so many mental Rosicrucians and alchemists. The other class, in which I myself humbly claim to be included, consider philosophy as the expression of a real fundamental want of human nature, which, by a law as inevitable in its action as that of gravitation, is compelled, as soon as it has raised itself above the absorbing influences of its-material nature, to search into the nature and extent of its own powers, its destiny, its connection with a world which it recognizes as distinct from itself, the nature of the power or powers observed to operate in that world, and its own relation thereto. At the same time acknowledging this fundamental a 2n' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The supreme importance which he himself attached to these subjects, and the light which his moral and religious views throw on his mind and heart, make it the more necessary to give them a prominent place in his biography. The fact that he did not establish morality and religion on a firm speculative basis, and that in some respects his efforts to do so reveal his weakness rather than his strength, does not in the least justify MORAL AND THEOLOGICAL INFLUENCE. 311 a neglect of these subjects here where the interest is not centred on the truth of the system but on the character of its author. Even when his influence is considered, his practical as well as his speculative works must be taken into the account. If the former have received less...
