Excerpt from On the Philosophy of Kant The return to Kant must be regarded as return to a mode of stating and viewing the problems of philosophy which appears to stand in peculiarly close relations to our present needs, and from which advance to a new solution may at least be looked for. Excerpt from The Philosophy of Immanuel Kant That he has disregarded this warning. There are no short - cuts to the understanding of a great philosopher, and the only way to appreciate the greatness of a philosophic system is to study the philosopher's own writings. All that the writer of a book like this can hope to do is to persuade others to undertake that study by interesting them in the problems with which it deals, and by offering a few suggestions which may help to an understanding of it. I have said nothing about the numerous other works which Kant wrote. For the three Critiques contain his system, and the under standing oi that is all-important. Excerpt from The Philosophy of Kant Metaphysical Philosophy is looked upon in two different ways by two Opposite classes of thinkers. By one class it is considered as a sort of mental gymnastic, valuable in strengthening the intellectual faculties, just as physical exer cise strengthens the body; or as a sort of introduction to positive science, just as the search after the philosopher's stone and the elixir of life introduced the science of chemistry, but having no further value. If this View be the correct one, then we must look upon Plato, Descartes, Locke, Kant, and many others, as so many intellectual trainers and fencing-masters, or as so many mental Rosicrucians and alchemists. The other class, in which I myself humbly claim to be included, consider philosophy as the expression of a real fundamental want of human nature, which, by a law as inevitable in its action as that of gravitation, is compelled, as soon as it has raised itself above the absorbing influences of its-material nature, to search into the nature and extent of its own powers, its destiny, its connection with a world which it recognizes as distinct from itself, the nature of the power or powers observed to operate in that world, and its own relation thereto. At the same time acknowledging this fundamental a 2n' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Philosophy of Kant in Extracts We do possess certain a priori Cognitions. And 'even Common Sense is never without such. It is easy to show that there actually are in our knowl edge necessary and, in the strictest sense, universal (con sequently pure a priori) judgments. Would we have an example from science, we have only to turn to any propo sitiou in mathematics; while, as for the most ordinary com mon sense, there is obviously to hand, by way of instance, the proposition that every change must have a cause, where the very notion cause so manifestly implies necessity (of connexion with an effect) and strict universality (of rule). That it would be altogether lost did we derive it, like Hume, from our conjoining what. Simply follows with what simply precedes, through the mere habit of the experience, and the consequent simple custom of connecting ideas (where the necessity could be only subjective). Philosophy stands in need of a Science which shall determine the Possibility, the Principles, and the Limits of all a priori Cognition. Excerpt from The Critical Philosophy of Immanuel Kant, Vol. 1 of 2 The object of this book is to give a connected view of the Critical Philosophy, showing the relations of the three Critiques to each other, and to the other works of Kant which may be regarded as illustrations or developments of his main argument. The first part, on the Critique of Pure Reason, deals with the same subject as my former work, entitled The Philosophy of Kant, but, except in a few passages, it is not a reproduction of it. Since the date of its publication, many important contributions to the study of Kant have been made in Germany and other countries. I wish especially to express my indebtedness to the writings of Dr. Vaihinger, Benno Erdmann, Cohen, Paulsen, Arnoldt, Stadtler, Staudinger, and Riehl; also of the late Professor Green and Professor Watson. In particular, Dr. Erdmann's publication of the Reflexionen Kant's has thrown much new light on the development of the Kantian philosophy, and Dr. Vaihinger's acute statement of the main Kantian in his Commentary is full of instruction and suggestion for every student. I have sometimes given references to these and other writers; but often I have found it impossible to recall or to trace what I owe to them, and must content myself in the main with this general acknowledgment of my obligations. I also owe much to the criticisms of my former book by various writers, particularly by Dr. Hutchison Stirling, by Mr. Balfour, and by Dr. Vaihinger; and I have attempted to meet them by giving a more careful and accurate statement of Kant's argument, and a fuller and more thorough estimate of its bearing and value. Excerpt from The Life of Immanuel Kant Kant is known chiefly as the author of the Kritik of Pure Reason. In giving an account of his life, however, a much more comprehensive view of him must be taken; he must be considered in the various relations he sustained. As his works culminated in ethics and theology, and were intended to establish these on a firm basis, his moral and religious views deserve more attention than they generally receive from English writers on his philosophy, especially since they are so intimately connected with his life. A critical discussion of his abstruse philosophy would be out of place in a biography. The English reader has access to excellent works on the Kantian system, and others, as well as translations of Kant's books, are in process of preparation. This biography aims to con centrate all the light on the man himself and his life. The great interest now taken in Kant's philosophy in England and America justifies the hope that the life of the Father of German metaphysics will be welcomed by English readers. If his works throw light on his life, it will also be found that his life aids materially in understanding his works. Excerpt from Kant and His Philosophical Revolution Yet, even thus, the immense difficulty of simple statement does not disappear; although Kant left no system in the strict acceptation, his technicalities possess rights that never lapse. I can but say that I have simplified to the best of my ability, and add, that Kant students alone are in a position to realise the obstacles to fluent exposition. As far as may be, I have subordinated moot problems in Kant philology, ' and avoided ramifications which could not be followed up within a space limited by pre arrangement. Excerpt from A Critique of Kant IN undertaking a criticism Of the Kantian philosophy, it will be necessary, first Of all, to review briefly its fundamental principles, in order to correct any false or distorted View which might destroy the conception Of the system. For we can justlv criticise only what we have rightly understood. And from a critical knowledge Of the system there follows the establishment of those new problems contained in it, which determine the course of the development Of post-kantian philosophy. We shall proceed, therefore, from the characterization of the Kantian doctrines to their criticism, and then deduce the pro blems which have led to their transformation and development. The Kantian philosophy as a whole unites in itself three fundamental features, which must be rightly conceived, and rightly combined, if we are to appreciate the full peculiarity of this philosophy which swayed the last century: they are Doctrine of Knozglea'ge, Doctrine of Freedom, and Doctrine of Deoeloplnent.
