Excerpt from The Life of John Adams, Vol. 2 There is reason to infer that all these things com bined to originate the experiment upon Mr. Adams, whose dissatisfaction with Count de Vergennes, not entirely unknown in Holland, might have reached the ears of the king. Mr. Adams, apparently quite aware of the delicacy of his position, in agreeing to a confer ence proposed by Mr. Digges, at Amsterdam, on the zoth of March, attached the condition that it should not be conducted without a witness, and that he should be at liberty to communicate all that might pass to Dr. Franklin and the Count de Vergennes; a wise precau tion, which proved not without effect in dispelling from the mind of the latter the suspicions of British tenden cies which Gerard had first implanted and which subse quent contentions had nourished. The motive assigned by Count de Vergennes for Digges's mission is singular. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Works of John Adams, Second President of the United States, Vol. 2: With a Life of the Author, Notes and Illustrations A Duar is the record in youth of a man's sentiments, in mid dle life, of his action, and of his recollections in age. To others, it can be interesting only if it have impressed upon it the stamp of strong individual character. But with this as a substratum, notices of striking scenes, of extraordinary events and noted contemporaries, may be superadded to form a memorial worth transmitting to posterity. John Adams's Diary, partially published in the 1850s, has proved a quarry of information on the rise of Revolutionary resistance in New England, the debates in the early Continental Congresses, and the diplomacy and financing of the American Revolution; but it has remained unfamiliar to the wider public. "It is an American classic," Zoltán Haraszti said recently, "about which Americans know next to nothing." Yet the Diary's historical value may well prove secondary to its literary and human interest. Now that it is presented in full, we have for the first time a proper basis for comprehending John Adams--an extraordinary human being, a master of robust, idiomatic language, a diarist in the great tradition. The Autobiography, intended for John Adams's family, consists of three large sections. The first records his boyhood, his legal and political career, and the movement that culminated in American independence. The second and third parts deal with his diplomatic experiences, and serve among other things as a retrospective commentary on the Diary; they are studded with sketches of Adams's associates, which are as scintillating as they are prejudiced, parts and in some cases all of which were omitted from Charles Francis Adams's nineteenth-century edition.

Excerpt from The Life of Andrew Jackson, Vol. 2 Adams's administration is interesting because in it were organized two new political parties and because it saw the progress of the long and unhappy war on Adams and Clay. The political situation was rather chaotic, and methods of opposition were uncouth and violent; but it was the seed-time of democracy, and it opened a new phase of American history. Excerpt from Memoir of the Life, Character, and Writings of John Adams: Read March 16, 1827 in the Capitol in the City of Washington at the Request of the Columbian Institute, and Published at Their Order To appreciate, justly, the patriotic labors of our Revolutionary characters, it is necessary to take a rapid retrospect of the state of the country at the time they commenced their career of toil and glory; and to ascertain, if we can, how far their predecessors had advanced in asserting those principles which led to the ultimate Independence of the American Colonies. Before our ancestors first visited America, the English barons had, in some measure, circumscribed the royal prerogative, and had, for themselves and for the people, extorted, from successive monarchs, reluctant acknowledgments, in the form of grants, of rights essential to the enjoyment of personal and civil liberty. They found it necessary, for their own security, to suffer the people to participate in the sovereign power; especially in regard to the levying of money. For, if the king could raise money from the people, at his will, he could, at any time, subdue the barons; and, for the same reason, they also found it necessary to retain, in their own hands, a negative upon the power of the commons to grant subsidies to the king. The king also found it necessary for his own protection to retain a veto upon both lords and commons. It was thus that their mutual fears formed a practical constitution, which it became their mutual interest to support. By means of the fears of the nobility, and the wants of the crown, the commons had been continually acquiring power; and, as they acquired power, they became proud of their liberty. And well might the Englishman, even of that day, when he looked round upon his neighbors, boast of his freedom. The nation, too, had thrown off from its breast that incubus, the papal hierarchy, and had begun to breathe more freely.
