Excerpt from Prophecy of Religion: Studies in the Life of Jeremiah Hen the Council of the Cunningham Lecture ship did me the honour of inviting me to be the Lecturer for 1920, leaving the choice of a subject to myself, I gratefully accepted the appointment, and offered a course on the life and writings of Jeremiah. Had I been younger, I should have preferred, instead of adding another to the many books on Jeremiah which have recently appeared in English, to try and break ground in some less frequented field of Old Testament theology. As it was, my choice was in fluenced by a long-standing interest in the study of Jeremiah's work and personality, as well as a hope that I might still be able to contribute something to an understanding of his message to his own age and to us. The Lectures were delivered, under the same title as the present volume, in New College, Edinburgh, in the spring of 1920, and are now published in accord ance with the terms of the Lectureship. I have to express my regret that publication has been unavoidably delayed beyond the allotted period; and also to explain that in preparing the work for the press I have not only expanded the lectures but arranged the matter under other headings and in a somewhat different order. In general, however, the substance of the six original lectures will be found in Chapters I and II; III and IV; VIII; VI and VII; XI; XV and XVIII. The te maining nine chapters are added in order to present a fuller picture of Jeremiah (though still an incomplete one) than was possible in the lectures. Excerpt from The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah: With Introduction and Notes The scope of the series in which this Commentary appears does not permit of any large dealing with the Hebrew text of Jeremiah; hence many points of interest to Hebrew scholars have had to be passed by almost unnoticed. For a similar reason the question of J eremiah's use of metre, a highly controversial and technical subject, has received but slight treatment. In the present volume no general review of the origin and development of Hebrew prophecy has been attempted, the subject having already received admirable treatment in the series, and the reader who desires more detailed information on the subject cannot do better than consult Dr Wade's note Hebrew Prophecy and its Credentials in his Commentary on Isaiah, pp. Viii - xvii.
