This is the true story of William Kirby's early life but mainly about his experience in WW1 whilst fighting in the trenches of the Somme, he and two other soldier mates made a solemn oath to find a sweet to help soldiers of the future have a little bit of sweetness in their ration packs. Unfortunately Bill was the only one who survived, the others were killed in action. When he returned to Oz he set about doing just that and the story unfolds from there. Eventually in the 1960's indeed Life Savers became part of the Defence Force rations! During WW2 according to a newspaper article he sold 10 million packets to the American Military from Sydney AND it is an American company! He started in 1922 as the salesman for Life Savers ( it started in Sydney set up as an American Company) and in 1925, he and James Stedman of Minties fame, negotiated the right to manufacture and sell as an Australian company, including the South East Asia region. It was then known as Life Savers (Australasia) Ltd incorporated in 1925 . Bill Kirby became Chairman of Directors in 1963. He named Quick Eze and Marella Jubes amongst other things. I only knew the real story back in 2016, when my sister told me. My grandfather passed away in 1989, just three weeks short of his 100th birthday! I believe this story is an important addition to Australia cultural history. He was an extraordinary man and the most wonderful man I have ever met. I absolutely felt compelled to write this memoir as I didn't know the story so the majority of Australians certainly wouldn't realise the significance of a product that is an Australian icon.I am very thrilled to be able to tell his story and so it will not be a forgotten legacy. There is much more to the story however suffice to sum up here. I am trusting that introducing this book will produce a lot more good energy for our returned service personnel as well as the Australian public in general.
