The Lightning Field(1977), by the American sculptor Walter De Maria, is recognized internationally as one of the late-twentieth century's most profound works of American art. The piece is located in a remote and rugged area of southwestern New Mexico's high desert and is composed of 400 stainless steel poles installed in a grid measuring one mile (east-west) by one kilometer (north-south). The poles average some twenty feet in height and are installed so that the tops form a level plane, which, according to De Maria, could theoretically "support an imaginary sheet of glass." Art critic Kenneth Baker began his encounter withThe Lightning Fieldin 1978, shortly after its completion, when he was commissioned by Dia Art Foundation (which owns and maintains the work) to write a study of it. The resulting essay--the shorter of two Baker essays that comprise the text of this book--is descriptive and reflective and acclaimsThe Lightning Fieldas "the closest thing to a masterpiece to come out of minimalism." Together these writings offer a uniquely personal and probing assessment of this major work of art. Dia Art Foundation curator Lynne Cooke has contributed the introduction, which placesThe Lightning Fieldin its art historical context. Beautifully illustrated with fifteen color photographs and ten black-and-white images, the book also includes a statement by the artist.

White Sands written by Geoff Dyer and has been published by Vintage this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-03 with Travel categories.
From “one of our most original writers” (Kathryn Schulz, New York magazine) comes an expansive and exacting book—firmly grounded but elegant, often hilarious, and always inquisitive—about travel, unexpected awareness, and the questions we ask when we step outside ourselves. Geoff Dyer’s restless search—for what? is unclear, even to him—continues in this series of fascinating adventures and pilgrimages: with a tour guide who may not be a tour guide in the Forbidden City in Beijing; with friends in New Mexico, where D. H. Lawrence famously claimed to have had his “greatest experience from the outside world”; with a hitchhiker picked up on the way from White Sands; with Don Cherry (or a photo of him, at any rate) at the Watts Towers in Los Angeles. Weaving stories about places to which he has recently traveled with images and memories that have persisted since childhood, Dyer tries “to work out what a certain place—a certain way of marking the landscape—means; what it’s trying to tell us; what we go to it for.” With 4 pages of full-color illustrations.

"Artists of any ilk can be extremely opinionated when it comes to what they do, how they do it, and what it might mean. Sculptors are no exception. Modern Sculpture: Artists in Their Own Words presents a selection of manifestos, documents, statements, articles, and interviews from more than ninety subjects, including an ample selection of contemporary sculptors. With this book, editor Douglas Dreishpoon defers to sculptors, whose varied points of view illuminate the medium's perpetual transformation-from object to action, concept to phenomenon-over the course of two centuries. Each chapter progresses in chronological sequence to highlight the dominant stylistic, philosophical, and thematic threads that unite each kindred group. The result is a distinctive, artist-centric history and survey of sculpture that showcases the expansive dimensions and malleability of the medium"--

WIth full-color illustrations throughout From the best-selling author of Sexual Personae and Break, Blow, Burn and one of our most acclaimed cultural critics, here is an enthralling journey through Western art’s defining moments, from the ancient Egyptian tomb of Queen Nefertari to George Lucas’s volcano planet duel in Revenge of the Sith. America’s premier intellectual provocateur returns to the subject that brought her fame, the great themes of Western art. Passionately argued, brilliantly written, and filled with Paglia’s trademark audacity, Glittering Images takes us on a tour through more than two dozen seminal images, some famous and some obscure or unknown—paintings, sculptures, architectural styles, performance pieces, and digital art that have defined and transformed our visual world. She combines close analysis with background information that situates each artist and image within its historical context—from the stone idols of the Cyclades to an elegant French rococo interior to Jackson Pollock’s abstract Green Silver to Renée Cox’s daring performance piece Chillin’ with Liberty. And in a stunning conclusion, she declares that the avant-garde tradition is dead and that digital pioneer George Lucas is the world’s greatest living artist. Written with energy, erudition, and wit, Glittering Images is destined to change the way we think about our high-tech visual environment.

Discover wonder. “A wanderlust-whetting cabinet of curiosities on paper.”— New York Times Inspiring equal parts wonder and wanderlust, Atlas Obscura is a phenomenon of a travel book that shot to the top of bestseller lists when it was first published and changed the way we think about the world, expanding our sense of how strange and marvelous it really is. This second edition takes readers to even more curious and unusual destinations, with more than 100 new places, dozens and dozens of new photographs, and two very special features: twelve city guides, covering Berlin, Budapest, Buenos Aires, Cairo, London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Moscow, New York City, Paris, Shanghai, and Tokyo. Plus a foldout map with a dream itinerary for the ultimate around-the-world road trip. More a cabinet of curiosities than traditional guidebook, Atlas Obscura revels in the unexpected, the overlooked, the bizarre, and the mysterious. Here are natural wonders, like the dazzling glowworm caves in New Zealand, or a baobob tree in South Africa so large it has a pub inside where 15 people can sit and drink comfortably. Architectural marvels, including the M. C. Escher–like stepwells in India. Mind-boggling events, like the Baby-Jumping Festival in Spain—and no, it’s not the babies doing the jumping, but masked men dressed as devils who vault over rows of squirming infants. Every page gets to the very core of why humans want to travel in the first place: to be delighted and disoriented, uprooted from the familiar and amazed by the new. With its compelling descriptions, hundreds of photographs, surprising charts, maps for every region of the world, and new city guides, it is a book you can open anywhere and be transported. But proceed with caution: It’s almost impossible not to turn to the next entry, and the next, and the next.
