The war in the Far East was marked by countless examples of courage and self-sacrifice. But it also generated a litany of horrors and massacres, not least amongst them the invasion of Hong Kong by the Imperial Japanese Army which was accompanied by rape, the widescale murder of Chinese civilians, and the massacre of Allied Prisoners of War. But amongst these atrocities, the sinking of the transport ship Lisbon Maru and the deliberate killing of hundreds of unarmed prisoners of war (POWs) stands out even to this day as a shameful act of barbarity. This book, though, is not about the invasion of Hong Kong and its bloody aftermath. Nor is it so much about the sinking of the Lisbon Maru - those stories have been told elsewhere. Rather, it's the authors' attempt to bring some degree of insight and remembrance into the individual lives of the 1,816 men who sailed on that ill-fated vessel.

A FAITHFUL RECORD OF THE LISBON MARU INCIDENT is a recent translation from an original Chinese publication covering an important chapter in Hong Kong's wartime history. It gives details of the Lisbon Maru Incident of 1942, seen through the eyes of the Chinese fishermen who rescued hundreds of British prisoners of war from Hong Kong, whose ship had been torpedoed. The Japanese had tried to keep them in the holds as the ship sank, and then shot at them as they tried to escape. These courageous fishermen not only prevented hundreds more deaths, they also hid three prisoners under the noses of the Japanese until they could be sent secretly on a journey across more than 1,000 miles of China to reach Chongqing, from where they could tell the world what had happened. The book also recounts the visit to Zhoushan in 2005 of one of the survivors of the sinking and his emotional reunion with those who saved him; as well as a visit to Hong Kong in the same year of the last few remaining fishermen who had taken part in the rescue.

On the 27th of September 1942, 1,816 British prisoners of war embarked upon the Japanese transport ship, Lisbon Maru, to sail to Japan to be used as slave labour in Japanese industry. A week later, over half of them were dead, killed in a calculated act of murder by their Japanese military captors. Over the next two-and-a-half years, many more died as a result of torture, brutality, starvation, overwork, and the withholding of medical treatment. Here is the story of just one of them, Lance Bombardier Joseph Denton, an ordinary man who found the courage and willpower to survive through extraordinary events. Much of Joe Denton's captivity was played out as a volunteer medical orderly in the hospital at Kobe House POW camp, in a small room where the medical orderlies lived, slept, and worked caring for sick and dying prisoners of war. In those first few months of occupation, when around twenty percent of Kobe House's share of the Lisbon Maru's survivors choked, bled, vomited, starved, or simply faded along the passage from soldier to corpse, at times Denton must have felt like he was serving in a Charnel House rather than a hospital.Yet if Joe was here today, he would, I think, protest at taking centre stage. Instead, he might tell me to write about his pal, medic Corporal 'Flo' Florence, or perhaps another friend and survivor, Norman Colley, a Royal Engineer the Japanese prison guards nicknamed Mr. Goat, in honour of his goatee beard. Mr. Goat's talented though irreverent musical compositions, performed by Denton and a group of musically inclined soldiers, brought brief though vitally sustaining moments of joy to the POWs, and also provoked occasional war-crime resulting rage in their Japanese captors. Joe Denton fought in the heroic battle to defend Hong Kong, survived the Lisbon Maru massacre, and served as a volunteer in Kobe House POW hospital, from the setting up until the final days of the war when a rain of Allied bombs destroyed the camp. Whether as a soldier, entertainer, medic, or simply a survivor, Denton played out the role that war assigned him with courage and determination. This book tells his story, and what an amazing, epic, and sometimes unenviable tale it makes.

Almost 2,000 British Prisoners of War were aboard the Japanese freighter Lisbon Maru when an American submarine torpedoed and sank her in October 1942. This book tells the story of those men, from the fighting in Hong Kong, through the sinking, and for some, to liberation and beyond. Although never previously studied in any depth, the sinking of the Lisbon Maru was the most costly American on British "Friendly Fire" incident of the Second World War. Of the 4,500 of Hong Kong's garrison who perished during the war, 1,000 died directly or indirectly from this sinking. From American, British, Hong Kong and Japanese sources, this book reconstructs the fateful voyage of the Lisbon Maru, and the experiences of the captives, the captors, and those on board the submarine that sank her. The book will be of interest to anyone wishing to know more about the "Hellships" that caused the deaths of almost 20,000 Allied Prisoners of War during the Second World War, or the experiences of Allied POWs in Japan.

Early morning on 1 August 1895, a group of armed insurgents attacked a remote mission station in China. An Irish couple, Robert and Louisa Stewart, and two of their young children were murdered. Three other children were wounded but escaped, while three older boys were away at school in England. From their early years, the six surviving Stewart children, most of whom were born in China, believed they had “unfinished business” there. One after another, each returned to their adopted country, where they founded and served schools, churches, student hostels, and hospitals. Their visionary contributions took place against the backdrop of the Nationalist Revolution, anti-Western demonstrations, and the Japanese invasion and occupation of China. More than seventy-five years ago, Bishop R. O. Hall of Hong Kong stated: “the story of the Stewart family needs to be told!” This thoroughly researched volume finally documents the lives and legacy of one of the most impressive families in missionary history.

More than 10% of Hong Kong's defenders were killed in battle; a further 20% died in captivity. Those who survived seldom spoke of their experiences. Many died young. The little 'primary' material surviving – written in POW camps or years after the events – is contradictory and muddled. Yet with just 14,000 defending the Colony, it was possible to write from the individual's point of view rather than that of the Big Battalions so favoured by God (according to Napoleon) and most historians. The book assembles a phase-by-phase, day-by-day, hour-by-hour, and death-by-death account of the battle. It considers the individual actions that made up the fighting, as well as the strategies and plans and the many controversies that arose. Not the Slightest Chance will be of interest to military historians, Hong Kong residents and visitors, and those in the UK, Canada, and elsewhere whose family members fought, or were interned, in Hong Kong during the war years.
