भारत की बहुभाषिकता भारत की शक्ति है तो भारतीय सृजनधर्मी साहित्य का सौंदर्य भी। कश्मीर का साहित्य वहां के जन की सृजनधर्मिता में विकसित हुई। लगभग 40 वर्षों से कश्मीर को दूर से देखा जा रहा था। इस दूर से देखने का असर कश्मीर में प्रस्फुटित साहित्य को देखने-जानने पर भी हुआ। परिणामतः कश्मीरी साहित्य विशेषतः कश्मीरी भाषा में लिखा गया। कश्मीर में रहकर जो कश्मीरी भाषा में लिखा जा रहा था, वह सब अपरिचित-सा हो गया। विस्थापित कश्मीरी समूह जहां विस्थापन की पीड़ा में सिमटकर रह गया, वही कश्मीर के अंदर जो लोग लिख रहे थे, घाटी में जो लोग लिख रहे थे, उनमें जाने-अनजाने कश्मीरियत की पहचान, ऐसी पहचान जो शेष भारत से अलग, अलहदा यह देखने लगा। और कश्मीर के लेखन में भारत अनुपस्थिति-सा हो गया। साहित्य में भारत लोग की और लोक मन की उपस्थिति है। स्वतंत्रता के पूर्व यहां तक की बीसवीं सदी में नब्बे के दशक के पूर्व तक के सृजनात्मक लेखन में यह लोक मन सर्वत्र परिलक्षित होता है और कश्मीर के वैशिष्ट्य के साथ भारतीयता का अनुरणन करता है पर नब्बे के बाद अलग, अलहदा कश्मीर और उस पर पांथिक उन््माद तथा आतंक की छाया ने सबकुछ खत्म कर दिया। संवेदना और सद्भाव, जो कुछ लिखा जा रहा था, उससे तिरोहित हो गया। नेह छोह नाते लुप्त हो गए। पर काल का परिवर्तन हुआ है। भारत का भारत के लिए कश्मीर का भाव जम्मू कश्मीर की आवोहवा में प्रसारित हुआ है। भारत के साथ एकात्म और अभिन्न भाव जम्मू कश्मीर के स्वर सब ओर गुंजरित हो रहे हैं। ऐसे में कश्मीर के साहित्यिक संसार का एक सम्यक् आकलन आवश्यक और अपरिहार्य प्रतीत हो रहा है। इस अपरिहार्यता को दृष्टिगत कर प्रस्तुत ग्रंथ कश्मीर के साहित्य संसार की संक्षिप्त समीक्षा है। कविता, कहानी, साहित्य, कश्मीर की भाषा की विशिष्टताओं को प्रतिनिधि तौर पर प्रस्तुत करने की यह कोशिश है.
