Almost nine million people from all over the world flock to the Louvre in Paris every year to see its incomparable art collection. Yet few, if any, are aware of the remarkable history of that location and of the buildings themselves, and how they chronicle the history of Paris itself-a fascinating story that historian James Gardner elegantly tells for the first time. Before the Louvre was a museum, it was a palace, and before that a fortress. But much earlier still, it was a place called le Louvre for reasons unknown. People had inhabited that spot for more than 6,000 years before King Philippe Auguste of France constructed a fortress there in 1191 to protect against English soldiers stationed in Normandy. Two centuries later, Charles V converted the fortress to one of his numerous royal palaces. After Louis XIV moved the royal residence to Versailles in 1682, the Louvre inherited the royal art collection, which then included the Mona Lisa, given to Francis by Leonardo da Vinci; just over a century later, during the French Revolution, the National Assembly established the Louvre as a museum to display the nation's treasures. Subsequent leaders of France, from Napoleon to Napoleon III to Francois Mitterand, put their stamp on the museum, expanding it into the extraordinary institution it has become. With expert detail and keen admiration, James Gardner links the Louvre's past to its glorious present, and vibrantly portrays how it has been a witness to French history - through the Napoleonic era, the Commune, two World Wars, to this day - and home to a legendary collection whose diverse origins and back stories create a spectacular narrative that rivals the building's legendary stature.

Paris has long been in the top three of the most visited cities in the world, attracting a record-breaking 38 million visitors in 2019. However, behind the glamour and shimmer of this iconic city, Parisians are under pressure. The city is expensive, overcrowded, polluted and full of tourists. But Paris remains a dream city for most citizens of the world. Its beauty and its charm, mixed with its raw and rugged character, are fascinating. It is an awe-inspiring mystery. In this book, you will learn how the river Seine shaped Paris's history, and how the city then built itself around that central area and survived the world wars. Featuring a comprehensive look at the city's iconic landmarks and museums, such as the Sacré Coeur, la Tour Eiffel, the Louvre, and L'Atelier des Lumières, as well as the world-famous restaurants and haute couture brands. This book is for Paris lovers, but also for those who have yet to visit or those desperate to return.

Hoiy the rooks build their nests. building their nests, instead of going away to a proper place, and finding sticks and straws of their own to build it with, they watch slyly for an opportunity, and pull out the sticks from the other nests near them when the owners of them are away. They use a great many sticks in building their nests, cementing them together with mud, and weaving in straw to form the inside lining; Punishment inflicted on detected thieves but instead of going to get sticks and straws of their own, they are very apt to plunder their neighbors whenever they get a chance. To prevent this danger, one of the rooks of the pair that own a nest usually remains by it to guard it while the other is away, and then, if any strange rook comes to steal the sticks or straws, he flies at him and drives him off. Sometimes, however, the thieving rook, by constantly watching, finds some nest unguarded, and succeeds in robbing it. But he does not always escape punishment for his crime, for when the owners of the nest come home and find what the thief has been doing, they go and get several other rooks to join them, and the whole company fly at the thief in his nest, drive him away, and pull his nest to pieces.
