Every child who goes fishing dreams of catching the biggest, most beautiful fish in the world . . . The hero of this tender, glowingly illustrated story catches a fish so large and splendid that he takes it home and puts it in the bathtub so we can keep it forever. He picks flowers from the fields to make his fish feel at home. He reads it stories about animal friends. But the fish is sad—and because the boy likes his fish so much and wants it to be happy, he learns a real lesson about love. Max Velthuijs, one of Holland's foremost graphic artists, has created lovely, bright colored pictures that are at once realistic and full childlike fantasy. The Little Boy and the Big Fish is a memorable book, jolly, sad, and wise, with the honest emotion that children will recognize as their own. Praise for Max Velthuijs’s The Kind-Hearted Monster “With enduring themes of acceptance and kindness, these stories will charm a new generation.”—School Library Journal

** A MAJOR TIM BURTON FILM starring Ewan Mcgregor and Jessica Lange ** ** COMING SOON AS A MUSICAL starring Kelsey Grammer ** Do you ever really know your father? Like many sons, William Bloom never really knew his father. Edward told him stories too incredible to believe about his exploits as a younger man, but any attempt to find out serious truths have been met with laughter and brush-offs. And that never mattered. But now Edward is dying, suddenly it matters a great deal. So William sets out to tell his father's story, as he imagines it. He tames a giant, is dragged by an enormous fish through a lake and escapes a purgatory of lost dreams. Through legends and myths, William makes Edward into a true Big Fish. The much beloved book by Daniel Wallace is soon to be a Christmas musical at The Other Palace in London. Praise for Big Fish: 'Both comic and poignant' New York Times 'An audacious, highly original debut novel. . . An imaginative, and moving, record of a son’s love for a charming, unknowable father' Kirkus Reviews 'Refreshing, original. . . Wallace mixes the mundane and the mythical. His chapters have the transformative quality of fable and fairy tale' Publishers Weekly, starred review

Joe Baxter Davis tells the story of his family who lived on a farm in Equality Alabama. Daddy worked in town as an auto body man and painter. Some of the time Mama taught school across the county and only was home only on the weekends. So my older brother Winston and my younger brother Michael and I did the farm work. We raised food to eat and to trade at the local store for things we could not raise. We took care of the animals, built fences, cut wood to heat the house, milked the cows and all the other chores. Even though we were young boys, we were farmers. Mama and Daddy depended on us. It may be hard to understand today what our farm life was like in the 1940s, but we all worked very hard to provide for our family, it was our way of life. When I was eight, I had to have surgery on my leg for osteomylitis, a bone disease. After a long time in the hospital I went back to the farm, but I was on crutches and could not do the farm work with my brothers. But guess what Mama and Daddy had a plan. They asked me to be the family cook. So in 1945 I became the full time cook. I was so happy. I had always loved to watch Mama cook but now it was my job. I would get up early in the morning and help build fi res in the fireplace and in the little kitchen stove, then I would make home made biscuits and cook bacon and sausage and eggs for the family. I was the full-time cook. I enjoyed cooking so much and my brothers and Mama and Daddy acted like they really enjoyed the food. Maybe they were just hungry. the Little Boy Cook is a collection of good old county recipes and memories from the past and recipes from family and friends.
