"In 1864 cousins Brandon and Sean O'Riain fled their tenant farms in County Tipperary as wanted criminals. Now, three years on, they are working as cedar-cutters in New South Wales's lush-green Richmond Valley. But while Brandon embraces the opportunities this new country offers, Sean refuses to let go of the past. And one of them is about to make a dangerous choice ... Nearly a century later, in the spring of 1949, Stella O'Riain is also fleeing her home - a sheep property on the barren edge of the Strzelecki Desert. She leaves behind the graves of her husband Joe and a baby daughter. With no money and limited options, Stella accepts her brother-in-law Harry's offer to live at the O'Riain family cane farm in the Richmond Valley. However Harry's refusal to discuss Joe - or the row that tore the brothers apart - leaves Stella with more questions than answers. In particular, why does she feel someone is watching her from a distance? And what is the real reason she is banned from speaking to the owner of the farm next door?"--Publisher

Two small children put together a make-do Christmas for their family. They ventured into the woods behind their house to find a Christmas tree. A scrawny little cedar tree was selected, and planted in a bucket of dirt. The hole they dug in the backyard was where they got their Christmas Dirt. Little Mary Jane and Jerry searched the house for items that might be given as Christmas gifts. The items were used, but everyone would have a make-do gift under the little Christmas tree. The make-do Christmas paper was from brown paper bags; colored with their broken crayons. Since there was no tape...homemade paste was made. The decorations for the tree consisted of a paper chain also from brown paper bags; colored with their broken crayons; a few #2 pencils were hung with thread to give the poor little tree some color; anything that sparkled was also hung on the little Christmas tree. Bill one of the older brothers, made a beautiful shinny star; making this little make-do Christmas tree the most beautiful Christmas tree Mary Jane and Jerry had ever seen. Bill placed a small lamp on the floor, just behind the little tree...the star and all the sparkly items made the little Christmas tree very happy.

The award-winning and surprisingly hopeful story of one woman's search for resiliency in a warming world Several years ago, ecologist Lauren E. Oakes set out from California for Alaska's old-growth forests to hunt for a dying tree: the yellow-cedar. With climate change as the culprit, the death of this species meant loss for many Alaskans. Oakes and her research team wanted to chronicle how plants and people could cope with their rapidly changing world. Amidst the standing dead, she discovered the resiliency of forgotten forests, flourishing again in the wake of destruction, and a diverse community of people who persevered to create new relationships with the emerging environment. Eloquent, insightful, and deeply heartening, In Search of the Canary Tree is a case for hope in a warming world.

Wanted Mountain Cedars written by Elizabeth McGreevy and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-04-15 with categories.

This controversial, eye-opening book by Elizabeth McGreevy suggests a different perception of Mountain Cedars (also called Ashe Junipers). It digs into the politics, history, economics, culture, and ecology surrounding these trees in the Hill Country of Texas from the 1700s to the present. Since the 1920s, reporters, writers, scientists, landowners, politicians, and cedar fever victims have characterized the trees as a non-native, water-hogging, grass-killing, toxic, useless species to justify its removal. The result has been a glut of Mountain Cedar tall tales. Yet before the 1890s, people highly respected Mountain Cedars. The Mountain Cedars they reported were large timber trees with strong, decay-resistant heartwood. Most were cut down and sold to boost the young Hill Country economy. The clearcutting of old-growth forests and dense woodlands and the continuous overgrazing of prairies that followed led to mass soil degradation and erosion. Acting as nature's bandage, Mountain Cedars morphed into pioneering bushes and spread across degraded soils. This book tracks down the origins of the tall tales to determine what is true, what is false, and what is somewhere in between. Through a series of revelations, the author replaces anti-cedar sentiments with a more constructive, less emotional approach to Hill Country land management.
