Rooted in the norm of active participation as the guiding principle for all liturgical celebration, each chapter considers the ecclesial documents that pertain to the particular objects under discussion, the theology found in the documents, and the praxis that flows from the theology. Now in its third edition, The Liturgical Environment has proven to be an essential resource for all those involved in planning, building, renovating, decorating, and worshiping in a sacred environment. This new edition is significantly expanded and revised to take into account important material from the Third Edition of the Roman Missal, the new General Instruction of the Roman Missal, Pope Benedict's apostolic exhortation Sacramentum Caritatis, and the Vatican's Instruction on the Eucharist, Redemptionis Sacramentum. Additional material has been added on celebrating the parish feast day, principles involved in decorating, and fakery in the liturgical environment. New information on the font and various baptismal scenarios for the Easter Vigil is also included. Three new chapters focus on celebrating marriages, funerals, and anointing the sick; on the concept of progressive solemnity in the liturgy; and on liturgical furniture for conference use when Mass is not celebrated in a church. Finally, new discussion questions present opportunities for reflection and discussion.

According to the post-Vatican II Roman Catholic Church documents, the church building consists of various rooms (chapels) where various liturgies—baptism, confirmation, anointing of the sick, penance, marriage, ordination, and Eucharist—take place. Vatican II required a new way of thinking about the church building. The purpose of this book is to provide catechesis and serve as an adult education tool for both clergy and laity about what the post-Vatican II church said about the various chapels under the roof of a church building complex. The call for active participation by everyone in the liturgy is the norm that is applied throughout this work. This fourth edition of the book originally titled The Liturgical Environment: What the Documents Say is designed to serve as an educational tool, especially for those building a new church or renovating an older one; also, it serves as a handy reference for sacristans, designers, decorators, renovators, all liturgical ministers—including bishops, priests, and deacons—and can be employed easily in study and discussion groups within a parish. The fifteen chapters are each divided into four sections: (1) the documents; (2) the theology found in the documents; (3) the practice; and (4) questions for reflection and discussion.

An aesthetic is a way of perceiving reality with a certain preference for order. A church is a particular product of a way of preferential perception of reality. The two "ways" may have nothing in common. In fact, the church might be built according to a preferential perception considered by very few to be aesthetic. What is a church? How does church architecture incorporate an aesthetic which makes a church both a work of architecture (and therefore, a work of art) and an authentic product of a Church's way of perceiving reality? How, indeed, can the cardinals and ordinals of religion and architecture intersect? These are the essential questions which underlie the search for an aesthetic for sacred space. This piece of research is an attempt to clarify the questions for a particular community, the twentieth-century Roman Catholic Church, but the questions have vast implications for all religious communities which must seek the cooperation of the sometimes-overlapping artistic community.

Liturgy And Hermeneutics

Liturgy And Hermeneutics written by Joyce Ann Zimmerman and has been published by Liturgical Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
By its very nature, hermeneutics?the art or science of interpreting?is interdisciplinary. It is equally important for scholars of literature, philosophy, biblical texts, and theology. In spite of the fact that interpretation has long been an important concern for Scripture exegetes and that in recent years liturgists have paid increasing attention to methods, there is no major work that specifically addresses the issues of hermeneutics for liturgy. Liturgy and Hermeneutics fills that void. In Liturgy and Hermeneutics Joyce Ann Zimmerman explains that all communication requires some interpretation, even everyday conversations in which we are hardly aware of it. But a great deal of communication is far more complex. Anytime we try to describe such things as an idea, a concept, or an experience, we are well beyond ordinary language use and into the realm of language as a symbol system. Since symbols have both a literal meaning and another level of meaning available only through interpretation, much of our communication is hermeneutical. Liturgy is no exception; it too is hermeneutical. In the past everything about liturgy seemed clear and understandable, and the rituals were denotative. However, Zimmerman argues, that lack of interpretation may have deprived worshipers of the richness proper to liturgy. A non-interpretive approach to liturgy tends to reduce it to rubrics or received grace. We must likewise be wary of an interpretation of liturgy that is too subjective. Only authentic interpretation examines liturgy's richness while remaining faithful to its tradition, doctrinal content, and ritual expressions. In Liturgy and Hermeneutics Zimmerman specifically addresses hermeneutics and its use in liturgy and liturgical studies. Her purpose is twofold: (1) to introduce readers to a complex body of literature so they can become literate in a technical field; and (2) to guide readers through the complex issues and strategies involved in interpreting liturgy (as text, as ritual, as life). Zimmerman does not promote a single hermeneutic approach, but instead points out the advantages and disadvantages of various approaches. Chapters are "What's at Stake?" ?Overview of Hermeneutical Theory and Issues, ? ?Critical Methods, ? ?Post-critical Methods, ? ?Hermeneutics and Liturgical Studies Today, ? and an epilogue that raises questions yet to be comprehensively addressed by liturgists.
