Now world famous for football and music, in the nineteenth century Liverpool had a very different reputation. Much of Liverpool's crime was based around the docks and the sea. Tough, hardcore sailors - known as Packet Rats - caused mayhem at sea while in the stinking alleys around Scotland Road the High Rip gang wielded vicious power. Liverpool in the nineteenth century was a place full of stories of assault, robbery and murder as well as poachers, footpads and highwaymen who preyed on the unwary.Against this tide of lawlessness stood men like Constable Casey of the Liverpool police, who disarmed two pistol wielding terrorists, and his police colleagues who not only dealt with the day to day crimes but more unusual crimes such as bombs in the town hall and redcoats rioting in the streets. Liverpool was, without doubt, a challenging and exciting place to live and work in the nineteenth century as the battle for the streets between the criminals and the lawmen raged on.

They have London's Soho as their backdrop and their roots in London's 1970's and 1980's gangland activity.In 'Stick or Twist' when a Soho club owner and gangster, Jack Mahler, discovers a plot by an East End firm to transgress on to his turf, he has little alternative but to meet the challenge head on. He and his firm of eight men, the Pendulum firm, attack the other gang on New Year Day 1972 and deal with them using sheer brute force. The battle is won, but the war is far from over. It is not long before a former enforcer for a notorious gang, Ronnie Clayton, appears on the scene and seeks to persuade Mahler to let him set up an illegal gambling den in his club. Mahler is not keen on the idea. When one Mahler's chief lieutenants, Tom Sutton, is lured to a party and murdered, things begin to turn very nasty. Mahler agrees to the deal but at the end of the day he has little alternative but to fight for his club, his prestige and his survival. When in 'A Cat's Tale' the main protagonist, a cat-burglar called Mike Keegan, steals a precious necklace from a flat in a Belgravia apartment house, then a foundation for murder is set. Following the robbery, several weeks pass, before Keegan commences the task of selling the item to a dealer. A man named Jack Deacon. Talks take place in the St John's Wood home of Cliff Lovell, Deacon's right-hand man. All looks good and a smooth transaction is anticipated. Keegan and Deacon conclude the deal and the swap takes place against the picturesque backdrop of Regent's Park. All seems well. However, tragedy is not far away. In an unforeseen twist, Mike Keegan's younger brother, Patrick, is shot dead in what looks like an open-and-shut case of mistaken identity. From this point on the story takes a whole different slant and direction. Keegan sets out to track down those responsible for his brother's murder, thereby commencing a quest for revenge. He quickly locates Lovell and forces him to provide him with information. Lovell names Deacon. Come-what-may Keegan kills Lovell, then confronts a man called McBride, who leads him to a killer-for-hire called Ross. The next action takes place in a central London underground station. Keegan succeeds in getting close to Ross and shoots him from point blank range. Keegan then sets out to locate Jack Deacon. Deacon owns and runs a strip club in Soho. Keegan finds Deacon in the club. Deacon is adamant he had nothing to do with the murder. Now Keegan needs to investigate further in order to determine if Deacon is telling the truth.In a tense and dramatic end scene, a third man reveals the truth of who is behind the murder. In doing so Keegan discovers who was responsible for his brother's death and why it occurred.
