Norman Mailer’s dazzlingly rich, deeply evocative novel of ancient Egypt breathes life into the figures of a lost era: the eighteenth-dynasty Pharaoh Rameses and his wife, Queen Nefertiti; Menenhetet, their creature, lover, and victim; and the gods and mortals that surround them in intimate and telepathic communion. Mailer’s reincarnated protagonist is carried through the exquisite gardens of the royal harem, along the majestic flow of the Nile, and into the terrifying clash of battle. An extraordinary work of inventiveness, Ancient Evenings lives on in the mind long after the last page has been turned. Praise for Ancient Evenings “Astounding, beautifully written . . . a leap of imagination that crosses three millennia to Pharaonic Egypt.”—USA Today “Mailer makes a miraculous present out of age-deep memories, bringing to life the rhythms, the images, the sensuousness of a lost time.”—The New York Times “Mailer’s Egypt is a haunting and magical place. . . . The reader wallows in the scope, depth, the sheer magnitude and—yes—the fertility of his imagination.”—The Washington Post Book World “An enormous pyramid of a novel [reminiscent of] Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow and Carlos Fuentes’s Terra Nostra.”—Los Angeles Herald Examiner Praise for Norman Mailer “[Norman Mailer] loomed over American letters longer and larger than any other writer of his generation.”—The New York Times “A writer of the greatest and most reckless talent.”—The New Yorker “Mailer is indispensable, an American treasure.”—The Washington Post “A devastatingly alive and original creative mind.”—Life “Mailer is fierce, courageous, and reckless and nearly everything he writes has sections of headlong brilliance.”—The New York Review of Books “The largest mind and imagination [in modern] American literature . . . Unlike just about every American writer since Henry James, Mailer has managed to grow and become richer in wisdom with each new book.”—Chicago Tribune “Mailer is a master of his craft. His language carries you through the story like a leaf on a stream.”—The Cincinnati Post

Carl Rollyson was Norman Mailer's first literary biographer to draw on unpublished letters and manuscripts as well as on interviews with the writer's friends and foes. Rollyson provides a full account of Mailer's college years, especially his fear of being drafted. Here are the sources of Mailer's mental crisis in the 1950s that led to the stabbing of his second wife, Adele. The Lives of Norman Mailer gets at the sources of Mailer's obsession with violence while also portraying a major literary figure in the making, from his fabulous debut war novel, The Naked and the Dead to his final bid for literary fame, The Castle in the Forest, a brooding foray into 20th century evil via an account of Adolf Hitler's early life. A final chapter rounds out a penetrating account of Mailer's final two decades of productivity which yielded books as various as a controversial biography of Picasso and a philosophical dialogue on the nature of God.

Tough Guy written by Richard Bradford and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-01-19 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

The first biography to examine Mailer's life as a twisted lens, offering a unique insight into the history of America from the end of World War II to the election of Barack Obama. Twice winner of the Pulitzer Prize, firstly in 1969 for The Armies of the Night and again in 1980 for The Executioner's Song, Norman Mailer's life comes as close as is possible to being the Great American Novel: beyond reason, inexplicable, wonderfully grotesque and addictive. The Naked and the Dead was acclaimed not so much for its intrinsic qualities but rather because it launched a brutally realistic sub-genre of military fiction – Catch 22 and MASH would not exist without it. Richard Bradford combs through Mailer's personal letters – to lovers and editors – which appear to be a rehearsal for his career as a shifty literary narcissist, and which shape the characters of one of the most widely celebrated World War II novels. Bradford strikes again with a merciless biography in which diary entries, journal extracts and newspaper columns set the tone of this study of a controversial figure. From friendships with contemporaries such as James Baldwin, failed correspondences with Hemingway and the Kennedys, to terrible – but justified – criticism of his work by William Faulkner and Eleanor Roosevelt, this book gives a unique, snappy and convincing perspective of Mailer's ferocious personality and writings.

Norman Mailer written by Robert Merrill and has been published by Macmillan Reference USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1978 with Literary Criticism categories.

It is easy to hold an opinion about Norman Mailer without having read a single sentence he has written. His tumultuous personal life and provocative opinions on contemporary social issues may at one time have made him, in his own words, the second most unpopular man in America, surpassed only by Richard Nixon. What is difficult is to hold an opinion about Mailer's writing that is not influenced by his image as a public figure. Robert Merrill's Norman Mailer Revisited, while acknowledging the unavoidable connection between Mailer's life and his works, screens out distracting gossip and biographical speculation to concentrate on a long overdue assessment of Mailer's aesthetic achievements. Critics assume "Mailer's books will not sustain detailed aesthetic consideration", Merrill writes, but it is "only by making these aesthetic distinctions" that we will "ever arrive at a just assessment of Mailer's importance as a writer?'. Three common assumptions about Mailer are that his ideas are more interesting than his art, his personality is more interesting than anything he has written, and his substantial literary gift has been squandered on works that fail precisely because Mailer is too little the conscious artist. By focusing on literary structure and narrative form rather than theme and the influence of Mailer's personal biography, Merrill provides a basis for distinguishing Mailer's most successful work from his frequent failures and for comparing Mailer's creative output with that of his contemporaries. Merrill addresses the gamut of Mailer's literary intentions over the 40-odd years of his career: from trivial publicizing to serious contemplation of world-shaking issues. He recognizesMailer's uneven accomplishment, ranging from almost unreadable pontification to well-shaped, considered works such as The Naked and the Dead, The Deer Park, Armies of the Night, and The Executioner's Song. Merrill speculates convincingly on the reasons Mailer was unable to find subjects to follow up his spectacular success in creating a "nonfiction novel": Armies of the Night, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award in 1969, and on the limitations of the genre. In assessing Mailer's entire fiction and nonfiction output, Merrill ultimately places him among the handful of writers who have most influenced both genres since World War II. Many critics agree on Mailer's importance as a cultural icon yet easily dismiss the possibility that he will influence future generations of writers and thinkers. Merrill argues that the literary and artistic merits of Mailer's work will survive his reputation as the "wild man of letters".
