Excerpt from The Lodging House Problem in Boston The lodging-house of any sort has claimed comparatively little attention in the literature of the housing question, and the room ing-house specifically has fared still worse. The only definition we have been able to find, outside the dictionaries, is the following: A lodging-house shall be taken to mean and include any house or building or portion thereof in which persons are harbored, or received, or lodged for hire, for a single night or for less than a week at one time, or any part of which is let for any person to sleep in for any term less than a week. 2 This is the definition given in the original New York tenement-house law of 1867 (chap. 908, sec. And it has been continued through all the subsequent acts with out change. It excludes the rooming-house, where the ordinary rental period is a week or a month, but which is commonly called a lodging-house, and in some cities is never called anything else. A definition so at variance with common usage is obviously defect ive, and may be positively misleading. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Gender And Consumer Culture Reader written by Jennifer R. Scanlon and has been published by NYU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-08 with Business & Economics categories.

In this consumer culture studies anthology, 23 reprinted essays (1934-98) consider both the empowering and disempowering elements of consumerism. In her introduction, Scanlon (women's studies, Plattsburgh State U. of New York) views consumer culture as a collaborative process, not simply a matter of perpetrators and victims. The themes the essays address are: stretching the boundaries of the domestic sphere; you are what you buy; the message makers; and sexuality, pleasure and resistance in consumer culture. The book features bandw illustrations promoting the cults of domesticity and identity through proper consumption. It lacks an index. c. Book News Inc.

Gender And American History Since 1890 written by Barbara Melosh and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-08-06 with History categories.

These essays chart major contributions to recent historiography. Carefully selected for their accessibility and accompanied by headnotes and study questions, the essays offer a clear and engaging introduction for the non-specialist. The introduction describes the emergence of gender as a subject of historical investigation and in ten essays, historians explore the meanings and significance of gender in American history since 1890. The volume shows how the interpretation of gender expands and revises our understanding of significant issues in twentieth-century history, such as work, labour protest, sexuality, consumption and social welfare. It offers new perspectives on visual representations and explores the politics of historical subjects and the politics of our own historical revisions.

Living Downtown written by Paul E. Groth and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994-01-01 with Social Science categories.

From the palace hotels of the elite to cheap lodging houses, residential hotels have been an element of American urban life for nearly two hundred years. Since 1870, however, they have been the target of an official war led by people whose concept of home does not include the hotel. Do these residences constitute an essential housing resource, or are they, as charged, a public nuisance? Living Downtown, the first comprehensive social and cultural history of life in American residential hotels, adds a much-needed historical perspective to this ongoing debate. Creatively combining evidence from biographies, buildings and urban neighborhoods, workplace records, and housing policies, Paul Groth provides a definitive analysis of life in four price-differentiated types of downtown residence. He demonstrates that these hotels have played a valuable socioeconomic role as home to both long-term residents and temporary laborers. Also, the convenience of hotels has made them the residence of choice for a surprising number of Americans, from hobo author Boxcar Bertha to Calvin Coolidge. Groth examines the social and cultural objections to hotel households and the increasing efforts to eliminate them, which have led to the seemingly irrational destruction of millions of such housing units since 1960. He argues convincingly that these efforts have been a leading contributor to urban homelessness. This highly original and timely work aims to expand the concept of the American home and to recast accepted notions about the relationships among urban life, architecture, and the public management of residential environments.
