What happens when the Long Count ends? That's what a team of scientists situated near Izapa, Mexico, sets out to determine in the years leading up to December 21, 2012 - the end date of the Long Count, the ancient Mayan calendar which some believe predicts the end of the world. When infighting threatens to break up the team before the solution is found, one unscrupulous member advances a theory that puts world armies on alert, brings religious organizations to a tipping point and global society to a panic. As thousands flock to Izapa on the end date to wait for the world to end, the team realizes too late that the danger they thought would come from outside the human race actually comes from within.

In this intense, heart-racing thriller, an American boxer down on his luck in South America just wanted to be left alone--but when he and several other U.S. citizens are taken hostage by terrorists, he is forced to take a stand. His name was Jim Racine, and years ago he had been a top heavyweight contender in the United States. But now he's over the hill and desperate, so he takes a fight in a corrupt South American country--and accidentally kills a young man in the ring. The public outrage forces an investigation, and the government refuses to return his passport. Racine is in limbo, but he figures if he can get to the U.S. Ambassador, his problems will be over. But when he crashes the Ambassador's party, he runs into a group of young terrorists who kidnap Racine along with the Ambassador and a few of his friends. When the terrorists murder a couple of bystanders in cold blood, Racine knows the hostages are next. But he's a survivor, and they're going to have a hell of a time killing him--even if his only escape involves taking all the hostages with him.

A page-turning psychological puzzle for fans of Shutter Island and True Detective 'The detail is unerring ... and this magisterial grasp of time and place lends the story vivid veracity. The characters leap off the page and the plotting is faultless.' JOHN BOORMAN (Director of Point Blank and Deliverance) 'I loved this book: it has such a subtle sense of place, the clear writing pulls you in right from the start, and its ingenious plot line is both shocking and inevitable.' A lively collection of fun and challenging problems in ancient Egyptian math The mathematics of ancient Egypt was fundamentally different from our math today. Contrary to what people might think, it wasn't a primitive forerunner of modern mathematics. In fact, it can’t be understood using our current computational methods. Count Like an Egyptian provides a fun, hands-on introduction to the intuitive and often-surprising art of ancient Egyptian math. David Reimer guides you step-by-step through addition, subtraction, multiplication, and more. He even shows you how fractions and decimals may have been calculated—they technically didn’t exist in the land of the pharaohs. You’ll be counting like an Egyptian in no time, and along the way you’ll learn firsthand how mathematics is an expression of the culture that uses it, and why there’s more to math than rote memorization and bewildering abstraction. Reimer takes you on a lively and entertaining tour of the ancient Egyptian world, providing rich historical details and amusing anecdotes as he presents a host of mathematical problems drawn from different eras of the Egyptian past. Each of these problems is like a tantalizing puzzle, often with a beautiful and elegant solution. As you solve them, you’ll be immersed in many facets of Egyptian life, from hieroglyphs and pyramid building to agriculture, religion, and even bread baking and beer brewing. Fully illustrated in color throughout, Count Like an Egyptian also teaches you some Babylonian computation—the precursor to our modern system—and compares ancient Egyptian mathematics to today’s math, letting you decide for yourself which is better.

The Ritual Practice Of Time written by Lars Kirkhusmo Pharo and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-28 with History categories.

Calendars of Mesoamerican civilisations are subjected to what is categorised as “ritual practices of time”. This book is a comparative explication of rituals of time of four calendars: the Long Count calendar, the 260-day calendar, the 365-day calendar and the 52-years calendar. Building upon a comparative analytical model, the book contributes new theoretical insights about ritual practices and temporal philosophies. This comprehensive investigation analyses how ritual practices are represented and conceptualised in intellectual systems and societies. The temporal ritual practices are systematically analysed in relation to calendar organisation and structure, arithmetic, cosmogony and chronometry, spatial-temporality (cosmology), natural world, eschatology, sociology, politics, and ontology. It is argued that the 260-day calendar has a particular symbolic importance in Mesoamerican temporal philosophies and practices.
