It has no weight of scholastic or ecclesiastical fame behind it. Yet such as it is, it is honest. It is the attempt of a layman - perhaps of a heretic - to think clearly. He is not concerned to "temper the wind (of criticism) to the shorn lamb," nor anxious to "reassure" anyone. He is not a Superior Person, and does not itch to "enlighten" the old-fashioned with "the new knowledge." This book claims neither to be "a contribution to scholarship," nor "apologetic." The writer has tried to set down what he believes a great many people think - people who are not very much enamoured of ecclesiastical controversy, or of patristic theology, or of sung matins at eleven, nor yet, perhaps, of high mass at twelve, who put but little confidence in bishops or university professors, and have little respect for dogmas which seem to be at variance with facts as far as they know them; and yet feel that in Jesus Christ and in His Church, and at the quiet service on a Sunday morning early, there is power and love and life of which they are in sore need.
