Alice's nightgown illuminated in the candle light, as she stepped slowly towards the hallway. She could hear her heart pounding loudly in her ears, as her bare feet touched the cold wooden floor of the hallway. Carefully, she carried the candle in front of her. The candle seemed to be her only guide through the darkness, of the house. A brisk whistling could be heard as the wind blew through the open door, the wind was jagged and icy as it hit Alice's face. She slowly turned the corner to see a figure covered in blood standing in the doorway. She was frozen she couldn't move as the figure locked eyes with her, the figure's eyes were cold shards frozen in blackness. The figure looked demonic as it stood there staring at her, turning its head back and forth slowly as if it was observing her. Alice's bottom lip begin to quiver and she let out a piercing scream. After this point, nothing will ever be the same for Alice...

A lucid memoir reckoning with grief and the search for understanding in the wake of a sister's suicide. Rebecca Spiegel is working as a teacher in New Orleans when she learns of her sister Emily's death by suicide. Shocked, she flies back to Philadelphia. To family. To funeral preparations. To the service. Only after she leaves her parents' house does the shock give way to grief. In the years that follow, Spiegel embarks on a physical, mental, and emotional voyage. She visits Emily's dorm, digs through her computer. She parses old journal entries and emails. She recalls Emily's visit to New Orleans mere days before her death, wondering what signs she might have missed. In documenting the last traces of her sister's life, Spiegel also confronts their parents' failings, as well as her family's history of depression, anxiety, OCD, addiction, and disordered eating. She faces her own regrets too. "I wish I had untangled myself from myself," she writes of her sister's final visit. "I wish I had been able to see that I was okay and she wasn't." With each powerful detail resurfaced, Spiegel attempts to put into words what is incomprehensible. She plumbs the depths of her loss in an effort to understand her sister, to uncover logic where it is most elusive. What she finds instead is that there is no narrative on the other side of grief like this. There is no answer, no easy resolution--only those that leave, and those that keep living. Unflinchingly honest, visceral, and raw, this courageous elegy lays bare the hard realities of surviving the loss of a loved one.

London society holds many expectations for gentlewoman Aldora Fiske. Despite her great proficiency at the great game of the social season, Ms. Fiske chafes at the restrictions her social position holds for her. It's only far from the prying eyes and wagging tongues of London parlors that she can truly live the life that she craves. She’ll find adventure with pirates high above the London streets, in the far off jungles of Mexico, and in the heart of the aging Ottoman Empire. It's a delicate tightrope she walks, between dilettante and adventuress, with one wrong step leading to utter ruin in the eyes of her elite peers. Still, when the alternative is an existence more stifling than any corset, the adventurous young woman will risk it all for one more thrill. Obligation and injustice collide in this second of the Galvanic Century steampunk series of Edwardian fiction novels.

The loss of a loved one is a traumatic event. If the loved one is your child, the emotions are further tested. Imagine having to cope with all of these feelings when also adding into the mix the challenges when the death happens on the other side of the planet in a country with a different language and culture. This is what one man had to face when his son died in the world's largest single plane crash. Peter Mathews lost his son Kimble, who was travelling with his fiancee Masako Nishiguchi, in the flight JL123 crash on 12 August 1985. From the time of the first phone call through his trip to Japan until his return back to the UK, Peter kept a diary and took photographs. Using these materials as a basis, this book provides an amazing insight into the events of August 1985. The book also includes details of the experiences and lessons learned by the JAL employee, Keith Haines, who was assigned to accompany the Mathews family to Japan. Their story is as relevant today as it was in 1985.
