"Yesterday, we picked up one of your CARE packages again. The joy was just as great as the first time. Many longing and jealous eyes followed our way as we carried your package radiantly home through the streets of Hamburg." In February of 1947, the German port city of Hamburg was in disarray. Citizens struggled to feed themselves from meager rations offered by the Western Allies, and increasing winter cold threatened to freeze families living among bombed-out ruins. Black markets flourished as Germans sought to supplement their meager diets with illegal goods, many often trading a quantity of cigarettes for a single loaf of bread. Thus, when 22-year-old Jutta Christoph received a package containing a bounty of cured meats, dried vegetables, and candy from her American friend Richard, her gratitude was unending. The Lost Letters of Hamburg features a 40-letter collection of post-WWII correspondence between Richard and Jutta, including full-resolution scans of the original letters and a German-to-English translation. The letters contain a fascinating glimpse into life in post-war Germany and the rapidly intensifying Cold War. Richard's WWII service as a combat engineer is also described in full detail, including his unit's heroic actions during the Battle of the Bulge and his prohibited first meeting with Jutta in the forests of Central Germany. In 2023, their story was painstakingly pieced together from correspondence, archival research, diary excerpts, and dusty artifacts miraculously saved from the landfill in 1997. It is a tale of a long-lasting friendship that was almost lost forever.

Hundreds of the letters that Gustav Mahler addressed to his parents and siblings survive, yet they have remained virtually unknown. Now, for the first time Mahler scholar Stephen McClatchie presents over 500 of these letters in a clear, lively translation in The Mahler Family Letters . Drawn primarily from the Mahler-Rose Collection at the University of Western Ontario, the volume presents a complete, well-rounded view of the family's correspondence. Spanning the mid 1880s through 1910, the letters record the excitement of a young man with a bourgeoning career as a conductor and provide a glimpse into his day-to-day activities rehearsing and conducting operas and concerts in Budapeast and Hamburg, and composing his first symphonies and songs. On the private side, they document his parents' illnesses and deaths and the struggles of his siblings Alois, Justine, Otto, and Emma. The letters also give Mahler's insightful impressions of contemporaries such as Johannes Brahms, Richard Strauss, and Hans von Bulow, as well as his personal feelings about significant events, such as his first big success--the completion of Carl Maria von Weber's Die drei Pintos in 1889. In the fall of 1894, the character of the letters changes when Justine and Emma come to live with Mahler in Hamburg and then Vienna, removing the need to communicate by letter about quotidian matters. At this point, the letters relay noteworthy events such as Mahler's campaign to be named Director of the Vienna Court Opera, his conducting tours throughout Europe, and his courtship of Alma Schindler. The Mahler Family Letters provides a vital, nuanced source of information about Mahler's life, his personality, and his relationships. McClatchie has generously annotated each letter, contextualizing and clarifying contemporary historical references and Mahler family acquaintances, and created an indispensable resource for all Mahlerists, 19th-century musicologists, and historians of 19th-century Germany and Austria.

After 1933, New York City gave shelter to many leading German and German-Jewish intellectuals. Stripped of their German citizenship by the Nazi-regime, these public figures either stayed in the New York area or moved on to California and other places. This compendium, adopting the title of a famous volume published by Klaus and Erika Mann in 1939, explores the impact the US, and NYC in particular, had on these authors as well as the influence they in turn exerted on US intellectual life. Moreover, it addresses the transformations that took place in the exiled intellectuals’ thinking when it was translated into another language and addressed to an American audience. Among the individuals presented in this volume, are such prominent names as T.W. Adorno, H. Arendt, W. Benjamin, E. Bloch, B. Brecht, S. Kracauer, the Mann family, S. Morgenstern, and E. Panofsky. The authors of the essays in this compendium were free to choose the angle (biography, theory, politics) or aspect (a single work, a personal constellation) deemed best to illuminate the given intellectual’s work. Acclaimed NYC photographer Fred Stein, a German-Jewish refugee from Dresden, produced numerous portraits of exiled intellectuals and artists. A selection of these compelling portraits is reproduced in this book for the first time.
