After John A. Macdonald’s death, four Tory prime ministers — each remarkable but all little known — rose to power and fell in just five years. From 1891 to 1896, between John A. Macdonald’s and Wilfrid Laurier’s tenures, four lesser-known men took on the mantle of leadership. Tory prime ministers John Abbott, John Thompson, Mackenzie Bowell, and Charles Tupper headed the government of Canada in rapid succession. Each came to the job with qualifications and limitations, and each left after unexpectedly short terms. Yet these reluctant prime ministers are an important part of our political legacy. Their roles were much more than caretakers between the administrations of two great leaders. Personal tragedy, terrible health issues, backstabbing, and political manipulation all led to their eventual downfalls. The Lost Prime Ministers is the dramatic saga of these overlooked Canadian leaders.

For every politician who gets to the top, to No.10 Downing Street, there is at least one, sometimes more, who was going to be Prime Minister. THE LOST LEADERS consists of three long biographical essays about the best Prime Ministers we never got. R A Butler, Denis Healey and Iain Macleod had their faults and made their mistakes, but given their sheer ability and essential good judgement, their reaction - by party misjudgement, intrigue or lack of talent for getting, but not doing, the job - robbed us of the best men of their time. Edward Pearce gives a sympathetic account of three fascinating lives. He also looks for the reasons why an obvious high talent is so often rejected for the supreme job. Too rough in Denis Healey's case? Not rough enough in Butler's? Offending the prejudices of the party as Iain Macleod did? Too busy working to plot properly? Too left- wing, not left-wing enough? Too clever by half - or, too clever?

The year 1721 has many splendours: great houses built by William Kent, fine pictures and the fruits of commerce. But there are also thirteen public hanging days a year, drunkenness is endemic, organised crime rampages through the streets. And politics are ferocious. Only a generation earlier, The Pretender failed to take the Crown; the new King is cursed as a damned foreigner; James's followers - the Jacobites - conspire and are persecuted; the South Sea Bubble collapses.Robert Walpole, once imprisoned for financial chicanery, assumes political control and becomes 'Prime Minister'. He personally detects a Jacobite plot, is dismissed in 1727 on the death of George I, recruits the new King's clever wife, Caroline, and bounces cheerfully back. Coarse, corrupt and cynical, Walpole dominates King, Parliament and Government until 1742. This is Mr Worldywiseman, keeping England out of war for twenty years and setting up a stable and growing economy. All politics of a kind we can recognise today begin with Robert Walpole. And here, in Edward Pearce's elegant book, he is brought vividly back to life.

Lord North written by Peter Whiteley and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-07-01 with History categories.

Lord North was in many ways a most successful politician. Prime Minister for an unbroken 12 years, his management of both parliament and of the business of government was adept. He enjoyed the confidence of King George III, not always an easy political ally, avoided factional strife (having no political following of his own), was notably uncorrupt and made virtually no enemies. In many ways he epitomizes the political outlook and aristocratic assumptions of the 18th century. He is, however, principally remembered for presiding over Britain's loss of her colonies. This is an account of his life. It includes a full study of the American War of Independence, examining it from the perspective of the British government as well as from the colonial standpoint. No senior politician had visited America and few had a proper knowledge or understanding of Americans. Too often the colonists were regarded as unruly and ungrateful children, with whom compromise was either a sign of weakness or the betrayal of the principle of parliamentary sovereignty. High-mindedness contributed to the final humiliation, as did ignorant over-confidence. Military defeat, to a country that become preeminent in Europe by the end of the Seven Years War, was not entertained as a possibility.

Excerpt from Prime Ministers and Some Others: A Book of Reminiscences I remember ten Prime Ministers, and I know an eleventh. Some have passed beyond earshot of our criticism; but some remain, pale and ineffectual ghosts of former greatness, yet still touched by that human infirmity which prefers praise to blame. It will behove me to walk warily when I reach the present day; but, in dealing with figures which are already historical, one 's judgments may be com paratively untrammelled. Excerpt from Lives of the Prime Ministers of England, Vol. 1: From the Restoration to the Present Time For the Preliminary Memoir, I have only to offer an absolute apology. It was commenced with the ia tention of being brought up to the Revolution a fact that may explain, but may not excuse, the contracted form In which it appears, and the too great space devoted to particular events.
