Centuries after their brutal slaughter by the northern French forces and their suppression by the inquisition, the Cathars continue to exert a powerful influence on both popular culture and spiritual seekers. But what did they really believe and practise? Tourists flock to the Languedoc to visit 'Cathar Country', yet few people know anything of the beliefs of the Cathars beyond vague notions that they believed in reincarnation, were vegetarians, were somehow Gnostic, and has some relation to Mary Magdalene. The Lost Teachings of the Cathars explores the history of this Christian dualist movement between the 12th and 14th centuries, offering a sympathetic yet critical examination of its beliefs and practices.

Why Were the Teachings of the Original Christians Brutally Suppressed by the Roman Church? • Because they portray Jesus and Mary Magdalene as mythic figures based on the Pagan Godman and Goddess • Because they show that the gospel story is a spiritual allegory encapsulating a profound philosophy that leads to mythical enlightenment • Because they have the power to turn the world inside out and transform life into an exploration of consciousness Drawing on modern scholarship, the authors of the international bestseller The Jesus Mysteries decode the secret teachings of the original Christians for the first time in almost two millennia and theorize about who the original Christians really were and what they actually taught. In addition, the book explores the many myths of Jesus and the Goddess and unlocks the lost secret teachings of Christian mysticism, which promise happiness and immortality to those who attain the state of Gnosis, or enlightenment. This daring and controversial book recovers the ancient wisdom of the original Christians and demonstrates its relevance to us today.

The history and philosophy of the mysterious Cathar religion and its lost treasure • Demonstrates that Catharism is not simply a heretical Christian cult as it is often portrayed • Examines the evidence for the existence of a lost Cathar treasure and its possible connection to the Holy Grail On March 16, 1244, over 200 Cathars were captured in their fortress stronghold of Montségur and were burned alive by troops of the Inquisition. While some Cathar enclaves survived into the next century, this was the death blow to a religion that had been a powerful symbol of Occitain sovereignty against the designs of the French monarchy and the papacy. History has recorded that four high-ranking Cathar perfecti carried a great treasure out of Montségur the night before its fall, a fact that led rebel Huguenots of the 17th century and members of Hitler’s S.S. to believe that an enormous treasure or weapon of awesome spiritual power lay hidden somewhere nearby the ruins of the former Cathar stronghold. Seeking to untangle the true from the false, Celtic and medieval scholar Jean Markale meticulously searches through the obscure history of the Cathars, tracing their roots back to the ancient Zoroastrian religion of Persia. He examines what earned the Cathars--who practiced vegetarianism, non-violence, and tolerance--the ruthless persecution of both the Church and the state. He explores their doctrine, their place in medieval Occitain culture, and their secret pact with the Knights Templar. Most important, he uses all available documentation to reveal the nature of the treasure the Cathars spirited away from their fortress at Montségur the night before its surrender to French troops.

In the 13th century, a group of heretics in southwest France, the Cathars, became a serious threat to the Catholic church. In several waves of repression, thousands of Cathars were killed. Yet so ardent was their faith that, early in the next century, the Cathars rose one last time. Using the breathtakingly detailed and uniquely extant documentation from this period, and drawing on his intimate knowledge of the last Cathars' tracks and hiding places, many of which survive to this day, René Weis tells the full story of this gripping historical episode.

The Cathars are one of the most famous heretical movements of the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. They infiltrated the highest ranks of society and posed a major threat not only to the Catholic Church but also to secular authorities as well. The movement was finally smashed by the crusade and the inquisitional proceedings that followed. This new study is the first comprehensive history of the Cathars. It addresses major topics in medieval history including heresy, orthodoxy and the Crusades as well as providing a history of the social and political history of Languedoc and the rise of the Capetian dynasty. A fascinating study of the development of radical religious belief and its violent suppression.

Very few of the Cathar beliefs have spanned the centuries. Most of what is bandied about at present, is derived from the files of the most Holy Inquisition, the enemy terminator of the Cathars. Because the Cathars believed that the material world was at best an illusion, it concerned then not at all what information, or dis-information, they gave those hard-at-work, painstaking Dominican Inquisitors. In actual fact, the advanced educated Cathar Perfecti, professed one thing while believing something entirely different. This book, A Cathar Gnostic Codex, gives some specific insights into the Dualist, Gnostic Cathar philosophy, be it terse, blunt, to the point. It is certainly not meant to convey anywhere near the entire Cathar teachings, and yet, it does conveys much that was the heart and soul of that burnt-out 'religion of love'. Catharism was the only major religion which was totally committed to 'pure unconditional love for everybody and everything, everywhere'. In that respect, they were indeed unique, for all religions profess love to varying degrees while sadly, latent 'hate' simmers quietly below the surface; hence our many wars of religious intolerance. The Cathars believed in love which was based on respect for all of humanity; man, tree and beast. They were also well aware of the complete incompatibility of 'power and love', so it came down to Roma versus Amor. Any Cathars who were in any way unsure of this maxim, had the lesson burned into them, at the stake. Thousands of Cathars took a roasting literally, by the Church, so it must raise a few clerical eyebrows to see this modern day resurgence of that despised heresy, Catharism. As can be surmised from the Codex, Catharism is a philosophy that is too high and remote to be constrained and manacled by the strictured doctrines of religion, of which the world has more than enough varieties. No doubt though, some controlling males will try it on with another stone church erected somewhere. Catharism, cannot be closeted indoors, for it lets loose the mind and full frees the soul. Begone, to the religious controls of heaven and hell; the day of judgement. Away with the Abrahamic Faiths, one shot at life, be it the most miserable of existences, while you or I have never had it so good. Compared to the fair and just system of reincarnation, where we will all experience the full gamut of life experiences, the one life, that's it, rather than deific justice and goodness, smacks more of beatific inhumanity to man. Contrary-wise, the Cathars held the belief that we will return until we perfect ourselves by learning to love unconditionally. The Cathars, as well, returned the beauty, intelligence and refinement of women, to equal place with men. After being banished by the Church for some 600 years, love was back, here to stay, thanks to the Cathars. Unknown to them, today, they would be considered egalitarian feminists, environmentalists and reincarnationists, which they merely considered, should be the normal mode of existence for all. This book A Cathar Gnostic Codex, speaks a relatively little but says a damned lot. For those it is meant for, it will eventually seek you out by emanation. However, not all are ready for the this newly arisen Cathar phoenix, being resurrected from the many ashes and cinders which was their Medieval fate. Thankfully, it is somewhat more difficult these days, to burn out an idea or ideal which has returned for the betterment of humankind.

As the 13th century dawns, an ancient scroll hidden in the French Pyrenees is rumored to hold shocking revelations about Jesus of Nazareth. To preserve this lost evidence of His teachings, a charismatic Cathar holy woman must defy Rome. Christianity is about to enter its darkest hour and emerge forever changed.Set during the religious persecution and political rivalries of the Albigensian Crusade, this is a fictionalized interpretation of the life of Esclarmonde de Foix, a revered leader of a heretical sect of pacifist mystics called Cathars, or 'Pure Ones.' As the Viscountess of Foix, Esclarmonde ignites the enmity of Pope Innocent III by challenging the Church's venality and corruption. When her fame grows after public disputations with the legates of Rome, the Church retaliates by launching a brutal forty-year war in Occitania that culminates with the nine-month siege of Montsegur, the Cathar Masada. Here is a rich tapestry filled with poignant love stories, monastic corruption, Templar intrigue, troubadour espionage, mysteries of the Holy Grail and the Tarot, and epic siege battles that reshaped the kingdom of France and paved the path to the Reformation. This timely novel about the Cathar Joan of Arc offers a cautionary tale for those who insist that militant theocracy and terror in the name of God could never take root in the modern West. It also challenges traditional beliefs about the origins of Christianity and the controversial role of women in the priesthood.
