But the fascination of the subject tempted me to continue the con genial occupation which the preparation of the Address to the Classical Association had pro vided. Expanding the treatment of those sections that were dealt with in that Address, I extended my survey over the rest of the broad domains of Nature, but still keeping on the whole with in the chronological limits of Latin literature originally chosen, that is, from the period of Lucretius to that of Statius. 'Nature' is a deceptively simple and ahistorical term, suggesting intrinsic, unchanging reality. Yet nature has a history too, both in terms of human attitudes and human impacts.
