Sooner or later most life in the Southeast and well beyond finds its way to the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Water, plants, animals and people flow inexorably east to meet and mix with ocean tides, carrying remnant soils that form islands along the coast. Like other places where there exists a confluence of life, wars have ensued. People have been enslaved, armies victorious and defeated, native people extirpated, and the land used and used again for whatever would sustain people and turn a buck. Its natural history is a story of clear cutting, mining, farming, hunting, reconstruction and restoration. Its cultural history has been a stormy ebb and flow, leaving seemingly disparate bits and pieces of humanity from hither and yon. The Lowcountry is home to soldiers, the working sons and daughters of immigrants, the super rich in gated developments, a vibrant Gullah Geechee culture, and expanding thousands of nomads who exit I-95, take off their jackets and remain. Culturally, the Lowcountry is more of a rain forest than a temperate forest, as it contains many species, but few of any one.The Lowcountry, a chapbook written by writer/producer Bill Pendergraft, captures in poems and photographs a bit of the plot, character and conflict of Lowcountry life. He is the founder of Environmental Media, a company that produces environmental education content. All profits from the sale of The Lowcountry are donated to the South Carolina Environmental Law Project to celebrate 30 years of service in the public interest, www.scelp.org

"From horse thieves to hurricanes, from shattered Southern myths to fractured family ties, from Nashville to Myrtle Beach to Miami, Low Country is a lyrical, devastating, fiercely original memoir" of one family's changing fortunes in the Low Country of South Carolina (Justin Taylor, author of Riding with the Ghost). J. Nicole Jones is the only daughter of a prominent South Carolina family, a family that grew rich building the hotels and seafood restaurants that draw tourists to Myrtle Beach. But at home, she is surrounded by violence and capriciousness: a grandfather who beats his wife, a barman father who dreams of being a country music star. At one time, Jones's parents can barely afford groceries; at another, her volatile grandfather presents her with a fur coat. After a girlhood of extreme wealth and deep debt, of ghosts and folklore, of cruel men and unwanted spectacle, Jones finds herself face to face with an explosive possibility concerning her long-abused grandmother that she can neither speak nor shake. And through the lens of her own family's catastrophes and triumphs, Jones pays homage to the landscapes and legends of her childhood home, a region haunted by its history: Eliza Pinckney cultivates indigo, Blackbeard ransacks the coast, and the Gray Man paces the beach, warning of Hurricane Hazel.

Known for its unique beauty and complex history, South Carolina's Lowcountry is one of the South's, and the country's, most fascinating regions. A wonderful blend of picturesque coastlines, expansive marshes, mysterious swamps, and verdant landscapes, the Lowcountry has played a vital role in our nation's history, from its importance as a port in colonial times, to its strategic location during the American Revolution, to its most famous landmark, Fort Sumter--the incendiary starting point of the Confederacy's struggle for secession. In this volume, you will explore this region as never before, through a rare collection of stereoscopic images. Also called stereoviews, these twin images were made by an early photographic technique which allowed the viewer to experience a vibrant and intriguing three-dimensional effect. South Carolina's Lowcountry has reproduced one side of each stereoscopic pair in order to facilitate an easier reading and viewing experience, which will allow you to take a visual journey through the defenses of Forts Sumter and Moultrie; to see both Confederate and Union soldiers posing in their camps, by cannon, and upon ironclads; to walk through the rubble of a war-torn Charleston and then observe the dramatic changes of the cityscapes in both the Holy City and Beaufort by the turn of the century; to stroll down a plantation's traditional avenue of live oaks under the peaceful sway of Spanish moss; and to meet a variety of Lowcountry inhabitants at their homes and at work.

Welcome to South Carolina's Lowcountry, the so-called “Netherlands of the South," where good tales grow like sweet-grass and the truth is as tricky as the Devil himself. Author Brian McCreight recounts thirteen tall tales told to him by his friend Jim Aisle, the Lowcountry Liar, whose homespun Southern yarns weave fact and fiction like the Gullah women make sweet-grass baskets. These tales are for telling aloud; the funny and the fantastic betide true Southern characters in a style as smooth as morning on the Stono River. Hear from Jim the stories of Brave Bob and his encounter with the ne'er-do-wells at the old mansion; of Lazy Lowcountry Jack and his troubles earning his keep and following his mama's orders; and learn about the Native American boy way back when whose hungry fishing trip wound up supplying food for all the coastal peoples. Jim even tells his own story: a firsthand account of a foggy morning on Buzzard's Roost Point, an area strictly off-limits to all but the conjure men and root doctors who work their magic there.

But when a friend challenges her to accept an exciting job adventure in Spain, Caroline says "yes" to a new destiny. But before she can pack her bags, Caroline suddenly finds herself the new owner of the run-down Frogmore Cafe—and forced to choose between her friends and her future. Love Starts with Elle Elle loves her life in Beaufort, South Carolina—summer days on the sand bar, coastal bonfires, and dinners with friends, sharing a lifetime of memories. She’s found her stride professionally as the owner of a successful art gallery. Life is good. And she’s found love with handsome, confident Jeremiah Franklin. But Jeremiah has accepted a large pastorate in a different state, so Elle turns her life upside down to take “the call” with him. When Jeremiah has a change of heart, Elle is hurt—and her faith is shaken. New York lawyer and recent widower Heath McCord imagines the lowcountry cottage he’s rented for the summer is the balm his grieving heart needs. That and time to connect with his little girl. He’s unprepared to meet his beautiful landlord, Elle Garvy, or the love her friendship awakens. But God has new blessings in store for the two grieving hearts. Can Elle trust so soon after losing Jeremiah? Can Heath release the memory of his wife and love again? Could love be as simple as trusting enough to take the first step? But Luke sees much more than just a co-host in Joy. Their relationship begins to simmer on and off set. Until Joy's secret is revealed and her reputation is ruined on national television by her rival, Wenda Devine. But could Devine's cruelty be a divine gift?
