The children in Madagascar rejoice in life's natural gifts--singing, working in the fields, helping their parents, and playing with lizards. Divided into three sections: "We Live!," "We Grow!" and "We Feel!," Torina's World: A Child's Life in Madagascar offers a glimpse into daily life in a Malagasy village, and encourages children in Western cultures to examine and reflect on life in a developing country. Ten years ago, author and photographer Joni Kabana spent a month in Madagascar. Her intention was to bring back images for her children showing how other children live. Torina, an eight-year-old Malagasy girl, acted as Joni's guide into this world. Back home, Joni's nine-year-old son, Benjamin Opsahl, helped edit the images and added simple, yet profound text that will engage readers across the world. Torina is now eighteen. She still lives in a small hut with her mother, father and six brothers. Her desire to further her education has been hindered by a lack of financial resources, thus a portion of the proceeds from book sales will provide funding for her education as well as other educational activities in Madagascar. Celebrate diversity with Torina's World, and join with readers young and old in embracing a multi-cultural perspective. Youth and identity politics figure prominently in this provocative study of personal and collective memory in Madagascar. A deeply nuanced ethnography of historical consciousness, it challenges many cross-cultural investigations of youth, for its key actors are not adults but schoolchildren. Lesley Sharp refutes dominant assumptions that African children are the helpless victims of postcolonial crises, incapable of organized, sustained collective thought or action. She insists instead on the political agency of Malagasy youth who, as they decipher their current predicament, offer potent, historicized critiques of colonial violence, nationalist resistance, foreign mass media, and schoolyard survival. Sharp asserts that autobiography and national history are inextricably linked and therefore must be read in tandem, a process that exposes how political consciousness is forged in the classroom, within the home, and on the street in Madagascar. Keywords: Critical pedagogy

In 1820, King Radama of Imerina, Madagascar signed a treaty allowing approximately one hundred young Malagasy to train abroad under official British supervision, the so-called 'Madagascar Youths'. In this lively and carefully researched book, Gwyn Campbell traces the Youths' untold history, from the signing of the treaty to their eventual recall to Madagascar. Extensive use of primary sources has enabled Campbell to explore the Madagascar Youths' experiences in Britain, Mauritius and aboard British anti-slave trade vessels, and their instrumental role in the modernisation of Madagascar. Through this remarkable history, Campbell examines how Malagasy-British relations developed, then soured, providing vital context to our understanding of slavery, mission activity and British imperialism in the nineteenth century.

Not illustrated. 1887 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER X. TRUE STORIES OF MALAGASY CHILDREN. I.--A Story of the Persecutions. (Translated from a native account.) DURING the reign of Queen Rab6donandrianampoinimerina, a public proclamation was made that all the Christians, or ' praying people, ' as they were called, should accuse themselves to the government, and 'those who do not report themselves, ' said the word of the Queen, 'but whom I hear of from others, I shall consider as guilty.' When the time appointed in the Queen's proclamation arrived, an immense crowd of people assembled at Analakely, a plain to the north-west of the capital. Many of those who had professed Christianity came to report themselves, and some of the great officers of State were sent down by the Queen to hear their statements. Then those who were to accuse themselves came forward one by one, and some of them cursed and swore that they would not pray any more to that Jehovah, 'ancestor of the white men, ' and the majority of them professed that they would discontinue the praying altogether. At last a beautiful young girl came forward, who was the only daughter of her father and mother. When the chief of the Queen's officers saw her, he said: 'Tell me, girl: what do you mean by praying to these ancestors of the white men?' The child looked up at him and replied: 'When I look at your bloodshot eyes' (for the officer was a drunkard) ' and fierce countenance, and hear your dreadful voice, you would expect that I should tremble and have nothing to answer you, but give way at once; but look you, now you are sitting in judgment on me, but hereafter both you and I will be judged by Jesus Christ; now your eyes are red and terrible-looking, and every one who sees you is afraid, but I tell you that hereafter you will be
