Nobody wakes up one day and thinks, 'I know, I'll run a brothel!' It was more a case of stumbling, quite by accident into the profession. Madam is a riotously funny and touching peek through the keyhole of provincial massage parlours. Becky Adams escorts you through her memoirs, from her challenging childhood to brothel keeping in Buckinghamshire. Her outrageous story is a witty and thought provoking tale of betrayal, friendship, love and loyalty. From saucy scandals and soft toys, to raids, robberies and 'fancy fetishes' all accompanied by a nice cup of tea and a ginger nut biscuit. The truth really is stranger than fiction.

Minneapolis Madams written by Penny A. Petersen and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-20 with History categories.

Sex, money, and politics—no, it’s not a thriller novel. Minneapolis Madams is the surprising and riveting account of the Minneapolis red-light district and the powerful madams who ran it. Penny Petersen brings to life this nearly forgotten chapter of Minneapolis history, tracing the story of how these “houses of ill fame” rose to prominence in the late nineteenth century and then were finally shut down in the early twentieth century. In their heyday Minneapolis brothels were not only open for business but constituted a substantial economic and political force in the city. Women of independent means, madams built custom bordellos to suit their tastes and exerted influence over leading figures and politicians. Petersen digs deep into city archives, period newspapers, and other primary sources to illuminate the Minneapolis sex trade and its opponents, bringing into focus the ideologies and economic concerns that shaped the lives of prostitutes, the men who used their services, and the social-purity reformers who sought to eradicate their trade altogether. Usually written off as deviants, madams were actually crucial components of a larger system of social control and regulation. These entrepreneurial women bought real estate, hired well-known architects and interior decorators to design their bordellos, and played an important part in the politics of the developing city. Petersen argues that we cannot understand Minneapolis unless we can grasp the scope and significance of its sex trade. She also provides intriguing glimpses into racial interactions within the vice economy, investigating an African American madam who possibly married into one of the city’s most prestigious families. Fascinating and rigorously researched, Minneapolis Madams is a true detective story and a key resource for anyone interested in the history of women, sexuality, and urban life in Minneapolis.

Madam written by Jeannette Angell and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-11 with categories.

In her first memoir, "Callgirl, Jeannette Angell led readers into the world of escort services, as the taught classes by day and worked as a call girl by night. Now she introduces readers to another part of that world as she recounts the life of a madam, Peach, who runs a successful mid-level escort service in Boston. Told from Peach's point of view, "Madam looks at all different facets of this life--from the need to run an efficient business to how she explains her career choice to others. Raised in the South, Peach came to Boston for college, but found herself sidetracked early on, her talent for business vying with her aspirations to literature. Finding herself working as a receptionist in a suburban brothel. she soon realized that she could run a similar business much more effectively--and with more kindness. And for some years she does, living at night, going out to clubs and restaurants... until she discovers that she wants more from life. Now married and the mother of children, her daytime life seems at odds with the business that she runs--or does it? Here again is a way for readers to understand an invisible world and an invisible life and to put faces on the faceless people of the night. Like "Callgirl, Madam's message is that they are not so different from the people who live next door to you. They may, in fact, even be your neighbors.

Policing Prostitution written by Siobhán Hearne and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021 with History categories.

Policing Prostitution examines the complex world of commercial sex in the late Russian Empire. From the 1840s until 1917, prostitution was legally tolerated across the Russian Empire under a system known as regulation. Medical police were in charge of compiling information about registered prostitutes and ensuring that they followed the strict rules prescribed by the imperial state governing their visibility and behaviour. The vast majority of women who sold sex hailed from the lower classes, as did their managers and clients. This study examines how regulation was implemented, experienced, and resisted amid rapid urbanization, industrialization, and modernization around the turn of the twentieth century. Each chapter examines the lives and challenges of different groups who engaged with the world of prostitution, including women who sold sex, the men who paid for it, mediators, the police, and wider urban communities. Drawing on archival material from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, Policing Prostitution illustrates how prostitution was an acknowledged, contested, and ever-present component of lower-class urban society in the late imperial period. In principle, the tsarist state regulated prostitution in the name of public order and public health; in practice, that regulation was both modulated by provincial police forces who had different local priorities, resources, and strategies, and contested by registered prostitutes, brothel madams, and others who interacted with the world of commercial sex.

Reframing Prostitution written by N. Persak and has been published by Maklu this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-07 with Law categories.

Prostitution has always fascinated the public and bewildered policy makers. Reframing Prostitution explores several aspects of this multidimensional phenomenon, examining different ways in which prostitution is and was being practised in different places and different times, best practices in the regulation of prostitution as well as wider social and psychological issues, such as the construction of prostitution as incivility or of prostitutes as a socially problematic group or as victimised individuals. The book also addresses normative questions with respect to policy making, unmasking the purposes behind certain societal reactions towards prostitution as well as proposing innovative solutions that could reconcile societal fears of exploitation and abuse while meeting the rights and needs of individuals voluntarily involved in prostitution. With contributions across social science disciplines, this international collection presents a valuable discussion on the importance of empirical studies in various segments of prostitution, highlights social contexts around it and challenges regulatory responses that frame our thinking about prostitution, promoting fresh debate about future policy directions in this area.

The cliche is that prostitution is the oldest profession. Isn't it time that the subject received a full reference treatment? This major 2-volume set is the first to treat in an inclusive reference what is usually considered a societal failing and the underside of sexuality and economic survival. The A-to-Z encyclopedia offers wide-ranging entries related to prostitution and the sex industry, past and present, both worldwide (mostly in the West) and in the United States. The topic of prostitution has high-interest appeal across disciplines, and the narrative entries illuminate literature, art, law, medicine, economics, politics, women's studies, religion, sociology, sexuality, film, popular culture, public health, nonfiction, American and world history, business, gender, media, education, crime, race, technology, performing arts, family, social work, social mores, pornography, the military, tourism, child labor, and more.
