Excerpt from The Magic of Spain It is not easy in a few words to account for the strange Oriental spell that Spain has exercised over many minds nor to explain the potency of its attraction. For indeed the great Peninsula possesses a special spice and flavour. It has not the immemorial culture of Italy, nor the pleasant smiling landscapes of France with her green meadows and crystal streams. The old Iberia, that dura tellus, has a peculiar raciness. Its colour is often harsh and crude; many of its districts are barren and discomfortable. The bleak and rocky uplands and the ragged sierra ridges cut the country into sharp divisions and cause it to be thinly and variously populated. On those uplands the breath of the wind is often icy and the sun strikes with a biting force. Great parched and desolate plains extend treeless and unprotected two thousand feet above the sea. The villages at distant intervals are of the colour of the soil, and scarcely to be distinguished from a mass of yellow-brown rocks. Excerpt from A Queen of Queens, and the Making of Spain The very name is an Open Sesame to the world Of romance, Of legend and Of story and as we gaze upon it, our minds are flooded with dim enthralling memories of a long-vanished past. The magic Spell is upon us. Once more we are in the unforgotten land Of Spanish chivalry and Moorish enchantment, where every tale Of prince and paladin, Of feast and foray; every vision Of stately rock-girt castle, Of fairy palace, Of dome and minaret - set in a fair garden land Of exquisite beauty passing a poet's dream - all combine to form the emblazoned tapestry on which stands forth the gracious figure Of our peer less lady Isabel the Queen. Excerpt from The Soul of Spain Bou, at Algeciras, at Irun. I am convinced that it is only by a succession of visits at intervals that an unfamiliar country, of such marked and strong character as Spain possesses, can be comprehended; it is necessary to meditate over one's impressions at leisure, to start afresh, again and again, with some old prejudice re moved, and a clearer vision of the essential facts; during a single visit, however lengthy, this is difficult to effect. Excerpt from Heroic Spain Thirty kilos, about sixty-six pounds, are al lowed free in the luggage van, but for an exten sive tour it is better to send trunks ahead by some agency, and travel with only the valises taken with you in the carriage. These the mozo, or porter, carries directly from the train to the hotel omni bus, which another good custom of the country is always in waiting, no matter at what hour the arrival. First class travel in Spain is about the same as second class elsewhere; second class is like third class in France, except on the express route from Paris to Madrid, and in Catalonia, where second class is comfortable. Excerpt from Royal Spain of Today Above all else, writers on foreign parts should be broad of view and unprejudiced, and if I have become prejudiced in favor of Spain, it is because I entered Spain without prejudice and have been by experience with people and country made to know and under stand its worth, its sterling qualities, and its fascina tion. Although grace and beauty abound, and music and dancing are on every hand, Spain is not, as some people believe, a country primarily of castanets and fandangoes. The Spanish people are today fully alive to their great internal possibilities; the rich mines are yielding once again rich stores, ships are busy entering and leaving Spanish harbors as of old, industries have seemingly taken on in these last ten years new impetus, new railroads are being built, and Spain is indeed born again. Surely Spain's great heritage of the past would point to great achievement in the future, and while an occasional exception in heritage may weaken the bond for a time, it rarely breaks it, and among all who understand the Spanish people of the present day, it is generally believed that Spain is entering upon a new era of progress and achievement. Surely they are fortunate in their young King, born to them a king indeed, in a moment of need and anxiety, but inheriting from all sides the qualities necessary to guide and guard his people. Southern Spain Classic Reprint written by Albert Frederick Calvert and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-10 with Travel categories.

Excerpt from Southern Spain Few travellers have leisure enough to traverse the Wide realm of tawny Spain in its every part. Those who must confine their attention to a single province naturally select Andalusia, Where all the Northerner's preconceptions of the South find realization. The wild scenery of Southern Spain, the gay open - air life of the people, the monuments attesting the splendour of the extinct civilization of the Moor, the spell of romance which still holds its cities, makes this land one of the most interesting and fascinating in Europe to the artist, the archaeologist, and the dreamer. The present volume, mainly the embodiment of personal impressions and observations, is intended partly to supply the place of a guide-book to this part of the Peninsula, and with that object I have brought together as much of history, art, and topography as the traveller is likely to assimilate. Into the descriptive matter I have introduced a little gossip, which will, I hope, be not found altogether irrelevant, and may serve to beguile the tedium of a bare recital of facts.
