This thesis focuses on the study of ferromagnetism in Dilute Magnetic Oxides. To investigate the origin of ferromagnetism, magnetic, optical, magneto-optical properties are intensively explored. These techniques have also been applied to investigate the presence of metallic nanoparticles in these oxides. Non-interacting particle model which can be applied to fit the results of hysteresis, and an alternative method of structural characterisation using EXAFS, Maxwell-Garnett (M-G) theory, which is very sensitive for estimating the volume fraction of nanoparticles in the sample, are demonstrated. A model is suggested to explain the observed ferromagnetism in Co-doped ZnO thin films; this includes the contribution from nanoparticles, the oxide host and the exchange coupling between these two components. A grain boundary model is suggested to explain the observed ferromagnetism in Fe-, Mn-, and V-doped In2O3 thin films which were prepared by the PLD technique. Intrinsic defects in the samples play an important role in determining the ferromagnetism but are not the only source, as is demonstrated by sequential anneal in vacuum and air. This work is expected to shed some light on the origin of ferromagnetism in oxide systems.
