On April 29, 1968, the North Vietnamese Army is spotted less than four miles from the U.S. Marines’ Dong Ha Combat Base. Intense fighting develops in nearby Dai Do as the 2d Battalion, 4th Marines, known as “the Magnificent Bastards,” struggles to eject NVA forces from this strategic position. Yet the BLT 2/4 Marines defy the brutal onslaught. Pressing forward, America’s finest warriors rout the NVA from their fortress-hamlets–often in deadly hand-to-hand combat. At the end of two weeks of desperate, grinding battles, the Marines and the infantry battalion supporting them are torn to shreds. But against all odds, they beat back their savage adversary. The Magnificent Bastards captures that gripping conflict in all its horror, hell, and heroism. “Superb . . . among the best writing on the Vietnam War . . . Nolan has skillfully woven operational records and oral history into a fascinating narrative that puts the reader in the thick of the action.” –Jon T. Hoffman, author of Chesty “Real and gripping . . . combat with all the warts on.” –Lieutenant General Victor H. Krulak, USMC (Ret.)

In the early morning hours of August 18, 1965, two battalions of Marine Corps leathernecks launched a surprise attack against firmly entrenched Communist troops on Vietnam's Chu Lai peninsula. Code named Operation Starlite, it would be the war's first full-scale battle between American and North Vietnamese combat troops. American military leaders who planned the attack knew the stakes were high; victory--or defeat--would have far-reaching political consequences. But no one could have known that the success of Operation Starlite would ultimately depend on the efforts of a mere 170 gyrenes--the "Magnificent Bastards" of Company H. At the height of the battle, in the face of wave after wave of fanatical North Vietnam and Viet Cong counterattacks, Company H suddenly found itself on the edge of annihilation. And as their ammunition ran out and they fixed bayonnets for one final stand, the Magnificent Bastards climbed out of their foxholes to face one of the severest tests of military history... Lawrence Cortesi was an American school teacher and prolific writer, who published multiple books, often telling history as a story in his trademark style. Born on August 6, 1923, he married Frances Barringer and had four children. He died on October 12, 1987.

A scientist, a semi-immortal clone, and a Grogon walk into the world's most popular Mongol-themed bar...Gibson, Super Patriot Boy, and Flapman are three pitiful nobodies--just three of the millions of miserable bastards condemned to walk the apocalyptic wasteland known as the Feculent Zone, the last refuge of life on Earth. They aren't happy and they aren't bright, but they're alive. And oh, what a life it is! A savage planet, hellish monsters, god-like AIs, and demonic babies are just some of the everyday plagues they endure. That doesn't even include the actual plagues. As if that weren't bad enough, Gibson gets them tangled up with the FZ's evil rulers. Suddenly, all three are cast into a race for the Cudgel of Malthior, a mystical object that just might save the Earth from its endless ends-of-the-world. It'll take bravery, quick thinking, and careful management of Flapman's liquor supply. And when they are forced to team up with their greatest enemies, the fate of the entire universe will rest in the hands of this gnarly crew. It's a lot of pressure, which they resent. If they can recover the Cudgel and not murder each other along the way, they won't just be bastards anymore; they'll be the Magnificent Bastards of the Apocalypse.

The Magnificent Bastards: The Battle of Ramadi" is a gripping and emotional book that recounts the harrowing experiences of the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines during the Battle of Ramadi. Set on April 6, 2004, the book takes readers on a journey through the intense combat faced by these brave men, forever changing their lives and leaving a lasting impact on the Battalion's history. Written by an author who accompanied Gold Star father John Wroblewski on two trips to Iraq, the book not only chronicles the Battle of Ramadi, but also highlights the personal stories of the forty-seven men from the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines who fought in the battle. Through their own words, readers gain insight into the harrowing experiences and sacrifices made by these courageous individuals. In addition to the combat accounts, the author also shares interviews with some of the Gold Star parents, shedding light on the profound impact the battle had on their lives. These interviews provide a deeper understanding of the personal toll and lasting grief experienced by the families of the fallen heroes. The final chapter of the book focuses on the author's and John Wroblewski's quest to reach Ramadi and pay tribute to the fallen. After an unsuccessful attempt in 2007, they remained determined to fulfill their mission. Finally, in March 2008, they achieved their goal and held a memorial service near the spot where 2nd Lt. Wroblewski was fatally wounded. This solemn ceremony, led by John Wroblewski, USMC Major General John Kelly, and General Kelly's PSD, was filmed and aired on national television, drawing attention to the sacrifices made by these brave men. But "The Magnificent Bastards: The Battle of Ramadi" goes beyond just recounting the battle. The book also seeks to establish a scholarship fund for the survivors of the 34 men who lost their lives during the 2004 Ramadi deployment. The profits from the book's sales will contribute to this noble cause, ensuring that the legacies of these brave individuals live on and providing support for their families.

There was a single, sharp tap of the drums followed by a rapid succession of beats as the crushed velvet curtains spread and the audience gasped: for Tran had taken her position in the box and was even now being secured as Williams struck a gunfighter pose and his hand hovered next to his weapon. “Ladies and gentlemen, I think it goes without saying,” said the announcer over the speaker system, “Do not try this at home.” Williams relaxed his entire body even as his mind cycled through the calculations—altitude, the breeze, humidity, temperature, the curvature of the earth, the spinning of the earth … It was, like music, a largely mathematical proposition; a cold equation he’d had a gift for ever since he could remember, ever since he was a boy with a Daisy BB gun in the backyard of their southern California home. He focused on the knife blade as the balloons to each side of it warbled in the breeze. It was a funny thing, sharpshooting, so utterly unlike music, in that each time he did it he felt like he was doing it for the first time, felt like he was starting over from scratch. With music his fingers just automatically found the frets, just instantly knew where to begin and where to end; he never felt as though he were lost in a vortex of potentialities, never doubted his ability to perform. But sharpshooting was a different beast altogether. With sharpshooting he had to call on something outside of himself as well as from within—something which was not his to control. Something which either kissed him with its ghostly lips or turned away with perfect indifference—like love itself, he supposed. Or God. And then the drum taps stopped and he was alone with the breeze, and it was time to make the intuitive leap which would set the bullet in motion. And as he breathed out and drew his revolver and squeezed its trigger softer than he would a daisy, he knew, even before the crack! and the ka-chink! and the pop of the balloons, that the projectile had found its target. That it had found the slim blade and split like an atom—becoming two loaves rather than one—two soft but lethal slugs, which had spread like shrapnel in the Fresno heat and ruptured the red balloons—releasing their air in a vacuum-like rush and causing the audience to gasp and to cheer. And then his wife was there, having loosed her mock bonds and scrambled out of the tall wooden box (with its crushed velvet curtains and bulletproof glass), and she’d bowed to the audience before embracing him like the wind, and he had kissed her as he always did after completing their final act—when air raid sirens sounded and he looked at the sky, which had darkened with a storm front as fast-moving as it was inexplicable ...
