In "The Maker of Moons," Robert W. Chambers masterfully weaves a tapestry of rich imagery and surreal narrative that explores themes of love, mysticism, and the interplay between reality and dreams. Set against a backdrop of otherworldly landscapes and infused with elements of the supernatural, the book reflects the Symbolist movement that dominated late 19th-century literature. Chambers employs a lyrical style, utilizing evocative language and intricate symbolism to invite readers into a realm where the boundaries of the tangible and the ethereal blur, offering a unique glimpse into the complexities of the human experience and imagination. Chambers, an American author and a significant figure in the literary avant-garde, was deeply influenced by the aesthetic philosophies of his time. His fascination with the mystical and the arcane is evident in much of his work, positioning him as a precursor to modern fantasy and horror. Chambers' background in art and his connections to the Symbolist movement shaped his distinctive voice, pushing the boundaries of narrative and paving the way for future genres that melded reality with the fantastique, including the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Readers who appreciate richly textured prose and a blend of fantasy and psychological exploration will find "The Maker of Moons" a compelling addition to their literary collection. It stands as both an exquisite example of late Victorian literature and a thought-provoking journey into the realms of consciousness and creation. This book is a must-read for those who seek to delve deeper into the mystique of human emotion and the duality of existence.

This massive collection brings together the entire body of Robert W. Chambers' weird fiction works including material unprinted since the 1890's. Chambers is a landmark author in the field of horror literature because of his King in Yellow collection. That book represents but a small portion of his weird fiction work, and these stories are intimately connected with the Cthulhu Mythos -- introducing Hali, Carcosa, and Hastur. Short stories from The King in Yellow, The Maker of Moons, The Mystery of Choice, The Tracer of Lost Persons, The Tree of Heaven, and two complete books, In Search of the Unknown and Police!!! This book contains all the immortal tales of Robert W. Chambers, including "The Repairer of Reputations," "The Yellow Sign," and "The Mask." These titles are often found in survey anthologies. In addition to the six stories reprinted from The King in Yellow (1895), this book also offers more than two dozen other stories and episodes, about 650 pages in all. These narratives rarely have appeared in print. Some have not been published in nearly a century. A Chambers novel, The Slayer of Souls (1920), is not included in this short story collection.

The Maker of Moons is an 1896 short story collection by Robert W. Chambers which followed the publication of Chambers' most famous work, The King in Yellow (1895). It contained eight new stories, including the title story "The Maker of Moons," one of his finest weird tales, and several romantic Art Nouveau stories, concluding with two less distinguished weird tales. The latter were subsequently incorporated into the episodic novel In Search of the Unknown. The first three stories are linked by the theme of a dream wife who is named Ysonde, and they form a triptych. The weird nature of the first story has interesting echoes in the other two, which feature picturesque animal figures, such as a Red Ibis and a disagreeable porcupine. The story "In The Name of the Most High" is a war story set in the American Civil War. The next two stories are humorous romantic tales with a fishing theme and setting. Chambers' love of natural scenery illuminates most of the stories. The quality throughout is rather fine. Published by Putnam's, New York and London, in 1896. The first edition featured a frontispiece with a black and white illustration by Lancelot Speed.
