The ancient Paharpur Stupa belonged to the Vajrayana sect of Buddhism, now an extinct sect. Vajrayana or Diamond Vehicle was a tantric or esoteric sect. It was an offshoot of the Mahayana Buddhism. The huge tantric stupa stands in the middle of the inner courtyard of the Paharpur Mahavihara - the Great Monastery of Paharpur. The Mahavihara, a world heritage, is the largest Buddhist Monastery in the world in terms of acreage. The Mahavihara, along with its stupa, was built with baked bricks laid in mud mortar in between the years of 770-810 AD. Every part of the colossal and intricate Paharpur Stupa symbolizes one or the other of the Buddhist concepts about the life and the universe. The three-tier Paharpur Stupa also contains a temple in it. Thus it can be said that it is a stupa-temple. Now a ruin, still it stands about 23 meters tall on the ground.

The Return of the Buddha traces the development of Buddhist archaeology in colonial India, examines its impact on the reconstruction of India’s Buddhist past, and the making of a public and academic discourse around these archaeological discoveries. The book discusses the role of the state and modern Buddhist institutions in the reconstitution of national heritage through promulgation of laws for the protection of Buddhist monuments, acquiring of land around the sites, restoration of edifices, and organization of the display and dissemination of relics. It also highlights the engagement of prominent Indian figures, such as Nehru, Gandhi, Ambedkar, and Tagore, with Buddhist themes in their writings. Stressing upon the lasting legacy of Buddhism in independent India, the author explores the use of Buddhist symbols and imagery in nation-building and the making of the constitution, as also the recent efforts to resurrect Buddhist centers of learning such as Nalanda. The tourism and hospitality industry of Bangladesh as a South Asian country has potential. Sustainable development of this industry in this country is on the move. Still, there are some hindrances which appear to be stymieing this industry’s overall development potential. Overcoming such hindrances can be partly enabled by applying digital innovation and introducing more Internet based platforms in the country’s tourism and hospitality industry. The country is believed to have emphasized innovative technology application in this industry, but technology applications in this industry in Bangladesh have so far attracted very few researchers, resulting in insufficient contributions and very limited knowledge. This book, therefore, can make a significant contribution towards the very limited knowledge in this identified research area. On the specific ground of technology application in the tourism and hospitality industry, the book covers concepts and context, the present scenario, product and service offers, and an analysis of the roles of public and private institutions. On related issues, the book also covers social media, networking and connectivity; sustainability practices and climate change effects; tourist experiences; developments; and challenges, suggestions, and future research directions. The book is expected to appeal to general readers, as well as researchers with an interest in technology applications in the tourism and hospitality industry. This book is also an essential read for the relevant policy planners and industry professionals.
